has anyone ever hunted with this round? I was just thinking about how it would make a perfect rifle for hunt the small deer here in CA. It comes in a nice light rifle and would also make a good practice rifle at the range. Just wanted to hear some stories about this rounds profromance.

Saw your post and did some looking into the caliber. Quite interesting. Was in the market for a deer rifle earlier this year, then decided a varmint caliber would be better served for now. I have a sister and her family in north central MO. that have retired from farming. Their land has been fallow for two years now. Would like to get a Non-res tag for deer there and will probably still get a deer gun in the next year or so. Hope someone responds about the .240. Would be a prize addition to any collection I'm sure.
By the way, I keep the pantry stocked with many of the fine garlic products from Gilroy. Dry rubbed some killer pork ribs and slow cooked in my Brinkman Sunday. Made the day of yardwork seem somehow worthwhile. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

CAhunter: I've been trying to put off writing this because it probably won't be what you wanted to hear. I have never hunted with a 240 but I built a pair of them once for two customers of mine. The rifles were accurate -as the 240 WBY MG is an accurate cartridge. The thing that eventually brought these two barreled actions back into my shop for rebarreling was the fact that the performance levels over the more common 6mm Remington didn't justify the cost. I took a look yesterday. Weatherby brass, 20 pcs: nineteen bucks. That's expensive shooting. For "small deer" and target work you could probably do better. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/two-cents.gif
As an FYI, the two I built were loaded with IMR4064 and 70 grain bullets to 3400 ft/sec. They both scared half minute-of-angle but never took the antelope they were built for. ~AMMOe

I'm trying to remember where I saw it, but there was a pretty good article about the 6mm cartridges in one of the hook-n-bullet mags.
From what I read, the 240 Wby Mag would be a good deer round, but as AMMoe pointed out, it's a little expensive without much return in comparison to the 6mm Remington or the .243.
I shot a bunch of whitetail with a .243, and wouldn't hesitate to use it here in CA if I could manage the range to within 200 yards. I don't like it for the long stuff simply because it makes a little hole, and seldom exits at that range... which means tracking a hit critter can be real tricky.
If you're shopping, then I don't know that the 240wby would be the best choice, unless you just wanted something "different".

the more I look at this round the less I like it. I mean its fine for deer and other smaller things but there are alot of pigs where I hunt and I just don't want to go looking for a pig in the thick brush. I like to drop them where they stand. I am thinking of getting a 308 for a light weight rifle and to practice with. maybe a vanguard.

I have the 240 WM in Ultralight and it is the perfect California deer gun. Rifle is 24" barrel and it is as light as my dad's M70 Classic Compact. I carry this rifle all day long in the Sierra and I have no complaint. Last bear I shot with a ballistic tip, the animal drop with 15ft and left a softball size hole at exit. A box of 20 starts at $40... the barnes-x are running at $59. I don't reload so I sell the brass on eBay at $20 a box....so the cost isn't all that. the brass has value for reloaders. Very costly but it is a rifle not to be missed!!! It is not an "all around" cartridge but I am comfortable using it on california black beer and deer. I will not even comment on accuracy. I will try to take some detail pictures and post it when I have time...
Took me a while but here are a few pictures I promised.
