How about a quick head count and bio to get to know a bit about everyone here?

My name is Jesse, I'm 42 and live in Southern California. I've grew up duck hunting in Missouri. Since moving to California it's been the Chino dairies for honkers, Wister for pins, mallards and snows and some jump shooting along the Colorado River. I'm still lugging around my old Rem 870.

How about the rest of you quackers? Don't foget you dog too. If you have any pics, please post them too.

My name's Jay (duh!). Born and raised in the east bay of the SF bay area. Started hunting when I was 25 or so. Started bow hunting deer and after I got my first one I gave it up to concentrate on birds. Ducks & geese are my favorite. Pheasants, dove and quail (if I can find them on public land) fill in the rest.

I have 3 boys, 12, 9 and 4. The oldest got his license and started hunting last season. He plugged a pintail and a rooster for sure, but practice is the keyword here.

The nice thing about the other bulletin board was that you got a continual source of new blood through the link on the DFG web page. We could get a little in-grown here

Well Jay, you can stop worrying about the inbreeding. There is now a link for this page on the DFG webpage.

Ok, lets try this. Dave Allen here. I live in Oakland. I hunt all over the place. Mainly in Ca but out-of-state when I can. I only hunt/fish for what I eat. I have been hunting public property for everything but this year I joined GR. I have been a solo hunter/fisher for most of my life but I am trying to change that. So, I am trying to hook up with others to share adventures. This year, I will probably be bow hunting for deer in Ca because I have tags for Montana so the deer in the freezer is guanteed. As some of you know, I am also getting active in proactively promoting our sports. I have a fear that we are going to lose our rights and believe we should be actively fighting our opponents.

I'm Jerry, from Pleasanton. Been around for 63 years(older than dirt). I'm a transplanted Georgia boy. Uncle Sam brought me to California(U.S. Navy)and a young lass(transplant from Montana)kept me here. We have a daughter that migrated to New Jersey and a son that rides helicopters for the U.S. Navy.

My dad taught me to hunt and fish when I was about 8 and I haven't stopped since. I've hunted ducks in Calif. for about 37yrs, with pheasants on the side from time to time. I started hunting ducks on refuges, then out of a boat on Montezuma Slough in Suisun Marsh and finally to private clubs. I hunted deer in Calif. til some bozo thought I was a fluorescent deer and took a shot at me. My next challenge is elk hunting in Montana with wife's childhood friends.

I also teach Hunter Education at Chabot Gun Club in Castro Valley. We run a 1 day class(approx 13 hours)on the 1st Sat. of each month if anyone is interested.

I retired from PG&E in '93, willing victim of corporate management downsizing and loving every minute.

Would like to see more private land open to duck hunting to give more people a chance to hunt and keep the ducks moving off the decomp water.

Welcome to the forum, glad to have all you here. I recognize a few names from the Refuge.

Greg, how was your snow shoot in Missouri? 5 weeks and I'll be back there for 10 days for turkey birds. You gonna be around there then?

Spec, you interested in another moderator notch on your belt, hint hint. With the ribald bunch we'll need several deputies to keep the peace. You do have asbestos shorts right?

Let's see some pics, I know some of you claim to have jobs so you must own cameras. UBB code works here for pics. Hit the help tab at the top of main page to see what ###UBB code looks like, it's real simple. I would post it here but your browser will think it's a pic and leave a little red x.

Here's one of some honkers landing in the closed zone alfalfa at Cibola last Jan 2001. Pic is off a camcorder so don't bag on my focus skills.

Another of the farm unit in Cibola. I watched a father/son team whack a mess of ducks this day while scouting. They pulled in about 2 pm and went to town.

Also, if any of you guys/gals are fishing, stop into the fishing forum here and say hey to Dave (fubar). He's quite a ###fisherman and feeling lonely over there with nobody posting much.

Hi, I'm Jack (aka M.Q. on the old forum). I'm an engineer who lives in Fremont. Started hunting at age 9 and have been chasing mostly ducks, but also deer, dove and chickens for 36 years. I started hunting ducks on SF Bay, but after my father took me to Colusa at age 15, I was hooked on the marshes. I now have 2 boys, 10 and 15, that accompany me. Life is good (although last season coulda been better).

Hey all,

Speckmisser, AKA Phillip here....here being in Union City, by way of North Carolina. ###I've been in CA for almost six years now, and loving a lot of it. ###I hate a lot of it, too, but I guess that's the trade off.

I've been hunting since my daddy used to carry me through the catclaws and blackberries chasing squirrels and bobwhites. ###I don't know how old I was the first time out, and I don't know how old I'll be when I make my last stalk. ###But between points A and B I'm having a ball.

If I can eat it, I'll probably hunt it. ###Deer, ducks, and pigs are my big kick since I've been in CA. ###I apply every year for Tule Elk, but we know how that goes. ###Probably going to start heading to other states for elk soon, if this economy thing doesn't kick me into the poorhouse first. ###I trek back to NC a couple of times every year to try for whitetails too. ###

Anyway... ###enjoying hearing you guys chat, and being a small part of it whenever I can. ###I've met only one of you so far, BigDog Dave, and if he's any indication, I'm in with a great bunch of guys.

Shoot straight, and remember. ###You can't call a bullet back.

Woodduck

Woodduck Here. ###AKA Phil. ###I've been hunting in the Northern valley for ducks since I was 10 years old in 1968......let's see, that makes me 42, with 32 years of duck chasing under my belt. ###I virtually grew up in the Gray Lodge parking lot and still call it home. ###I have finally learned to blow a call and set decoys in the past few years to get a little better at this sport.

I typically hunt 6-8 areas during the season from Tule/Klamath to LDC and Howard, Gray Lodge, Sutter, Grizzly occasionally, rarely on the west side of the valley. ###I save all my vacation days each year to sit in line at Sutter. ###I shoot an over/under, occasionally use a moto, and never shoot over 25 yards, or so.

I also am passionate about fly fishing and fly tying.I try to spend a week or so each year in Montana chasing trout. ###I even started my own web fly shop this year! ### ###Any of you long rodders, come visit my site at http://www.philscustomflies.bigstep.com . ###I tie a darned nice trout fly! ###What else is there to do in line at Sutter!

My partner Rob and I host the Gray Lodge Clean-up day each for CWA. ###Come up this year on April 14th. ###We also are active in the Woodduck program at Gray Lodge. ###If you see any boxes marked GLH, those are ours! ###GLH stands for Gray Lodge Heights, the rag tag group of trailers at the end of the parking lot.

I drive a white Ford with and Six Pac camper and generally always have extras for those that stop by for breakfast or dinner. ###Extra Scotch is always welcome.

Hello, I'm Kris. ###Be 28 next month. Mechanical engineer. ###I live in Arkansas. I try and hunt everything Arkansas has to offer. ###I hunt ducks around the Stuttgart area "The waterfowl capital of the world!" ###
Started out rabbit hunting with my dad when I was old enough to tote a .410. That is the stuff you never forget.
I've got a 10 month old black lab named Shelby. Last weekend she decided her quilt would be better to eat than to lay on. She now has a nice 10 inch long set of stitches down her belly to remind her that it really didn't taste that good.

Name is Rick and I live in Pleasanton. ###47 years old with a 24 year old son that loves hunting and fishing as much as I do. ###My dad started me off 36 years ago at Wister - I grew up in Van Nuys. ###Also hunted Kern in the old days when they had a slide show the evening before each hunt and had a "snack bar" that served hot chili. ###Ahh, those were nice days and nights spent out there. ###My dad used to bring a boat and we would hunt unit 1. ###Always did real well there. ###My dad suffered what turned out to be a fatal heart
attack at Kern in Nov., 1991. ###My brother also hunts with my son and I and we keep the memories of my dad going. ###Now, my seasons are spent between the Sac valley area and the Grasslands. ###Last year I hunted 15 times and ended with a 2.5 average. ###I also spent 8 of those trips hunting just the afternoons. ###Not as crowded and not as many birds...but
they were very special times. ###I also hunt pheasant, but my dog died a few years ago, so my opportunities there have been limited. ###Retirement in a few years will see me with a
new dog. For now...my son does the retrive....

Hay Jess sorry about being late to answer, won't be going back to MO. till May my son grads then and I would not miss that for anything, we had a real good snow goose hunt 99 birds total plus about 20 walking cripps that we could never catch up to, but the hawks & yotes ate well, the decoying was tuff going as these guys had seen it all and it was so damn muddy in the fields and my e caller ate my new tape in first 5min, but the pass shooting was great and several good sneaks put many a bird on the ground, the farmers just loved us there, as one even took us to dinner at Jims steak house in Pittsburg KS.

Good luck on the turkey hunt you hunting up north we saw a ton of turkeys one bunch had 28 toms & jakes in it.

i'll try to post a pic. or two of the hunt if I can figure it out.

Hi, my name is Eric. I live in the San Fernando Valley and have a swimming pool construction company. I am originally from Utah and still have property there and go back as often as possible. I have hunted and fished all my life. I do all types of hunting. To give examples and where I go here is what my year is usually like.
Jan- ###Cow elk hunt in utah, combined with ducks and geese, which are on until mid Jan.
Feb, March- Training dogs, I have 2 labs with MH titles and run field trials and hunt tests.
April, May- ###Pigs, Turkeys, and eastern sierra trout. More dogs.
June, July, August. Pigs, trout, San Diego tuna. ###More dogs.CA deer.
Sept. Oct.- Parker Arizona doves, Utah and CA deer. Elk depending on draws. Waterfowl.
Nov. Dec.-Pheasants, Waterfowl at KNWR once a week or elsewhere depending on draws. Archery deer in L.A. area. Utah for more waterfowl. And as always, more dogs.
In between I try and work once in awhile and do Boy Scouts with my 14 year old son. He is starting to get the outdoor bug. I also go to several gun shows a year with a family owned gun company called Christensen Arms. We make carbon fiber barreled rifles. As you can tell I have never understood anybody saying " theres nothing to do" . The back of by boat says called the "Quacker ###Smacker" also says "Just DU it"

Livermore is my hometown. ###My buddy and I hunted doves and rabbits in his family's vineyard. ###After high school I drifted away from hunting. ###Then, a few years ago, my buddy called me up and took me out to Sac on the last Saturday of the season. ###As kids we really hadn't hunted ducks, but he had stuck with hunting and taken to the marsh. ###That morning, ###the geese came up out of the closed zone and I was awe struck. ###I was hooked on waterfowling. ###I realized I was born to hunt and every fall would find me in the field. Before I'd even fired a shot, the geese had brought me back to who I was.

Now I hunt the public areas of the Sacramento Valley with my 12-year-old son. ###I live in Chico, and work as a Civil Engineer.

I'm 33 and live in West Sacramento. ###I've hunted and fished since shortly after birth I think. ###I hunt for just about anything that moves with my favorites being the three D's; deer, duck and doves. ###I've hunted CA, OR, WY, ID, NV and CO with my favorite being Wyoming. ###I fish for mainly salmon and striper. ###I've been married for 11 years and my wife enjoys hunting and fishing when she's got the time. ###I won't take her fishing anymore until I top her 35lb striper on the wall though...

My name is John, and I'm 33 years old. ###Live in San Jose, have hunted the last few years near Kesterson, but will be branching out next year. ###I've hunted ducks since I was 11, and plan to keep doing it until I can't make it out to the blind. ###I'm waiting to pick up a pup, which will be my first duck dog (eventually), which is making this off-season even more painful that past ones.

I also have a passion for rainbows, steelhead, and salmon. Not to mention halibut in Tomales. I mainly hunt Howard for ducks. In fact I rarely hunt ducks anywhere else. I'm 42 and have lived around Sactown most of the last 26 yrs. ###Careers include Criminal Justice System (White Hat), Management Analyst (Resources) and rafting guide (20+ yrs).

Waterfowling is tops on my list; Sac/Del/Gray are my favorites. ###I prefer staked fields over blinds or being elbowed in free-roam. ###I have been tempted, but not totally corrupted, by the darkside. ###Want to experience Klamath/Tule, and learn about hunting San Pablo and Delta backwaters. ###Also enjoy deer, pheasant, dove and quail hunting. ###Piscatorial pursuits include trout, halibut and anything anadromous. ###I do some volunteer work: ###CWA Placer, DFG projects, and serve as a Hunter Ed Instructor. Still do whitewater rafting as time allows.

Wife is a vet and she does a little hunting & fishing too. We have two boys, 5 and 2 years. ###The family is rounded-out with two worthless hunting dogs (Lab & GSP - charity cases) and two worthless critters (cats).

Always interested in exchanging hunts and excursions.

I have been hunting the upper Sacramento Valley since I was a kid, started hunting around Sac refuge before there was a hunting program. ###Hunted private ground for about 20 years and then switched to the club scene for awhile. ###Got tired of the same hole day after day and then switched to public hunting. ###Started out at Gray Lodge for about 4 years and then when a guy shot a cripple on the water and pierced my ear for me I gave up on Gray Lodge and moved my hunting to Sac, Delevan LDC, and Colusa with an occasional, Howard Slough and Sutter thrown in to round things out. ###Am 50 years old and still have the passion to be out there in the marsh. ###After several years have learned that its important to give back to the resource that has given us so much. It doesn't always have to be consumptive to make it a great day.

[FONT=Arial]Hey everyone. This is my first post on this site. I was a long time user of SDH if anyone is famailiar with the site. I hail most recently from Baton Rouge, LA. I am now in the Army in Monterey, CA and looking for people and places. Favorite ducks to shoot include pintail, woody, teal and mallard. And of course grey ducks just b/c they are so plentiful. Also enjoy a good coot (called pouldeau back home) shoot just for meat to make gumbo. Any advice or anything offered will be greatly appreciated on places and what not to hunt. Looking to maybe even shoot something I've never shot before such as a cinnamon teal or something. I've hunted flooded swamps and marshes. Hope to read and post some great threads here. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-ani.gif

Hi! My name is Jonny. I'm a 24 business owner, just got married to the most amazing woman, and have been chasing ducks & geese since my dad introduced the sport to me at age 4.He started me off hunting at our favorite place on earth, Tule Lake & Lower Klamath. Good way to break a kid in on cold weather! burrrr!!!, I remember when I was 6 and my dad read the thermometer on the way out and it read -10 F.I shot my first honker at age 8 and I've been hooked ever since. We try to hunt klamath yearly if we can, but lately its been trips up to Sask. for the most amazing hunting I have ever experienced. We also hunt the midwest for spring snows and got to laugh my a$$ off pretending to be a cow. We make the usual trips to wister and mendota whenever we can get away from work(oh,and now my new bride http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif ) Luckily, I took her down to wister with me before we got married and she passed the test with flying colors http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-patriotic-flagwaver-ani.gif .
I've posted some pix of some of our better days in the photo gallery under waterfowling. Anyway, its always just me, my dad and our black lab Hank, . We all share the same addiction and passion of pursuing ducks and geese.
Nice to meet everyone here, Good luck to all this coming season!

Name is David Quinn, live in Antioch with my wife and daughter. 32yrs old.
Born in Canada and traveled all over North America working construction for 10yrs, got tired of the "road" life and settled here in Antioch after meeting my wife.
Grew up hunting private land at home in Canada. When I was travelling for work hunting kinda fell by the wayside and I have only gotten started again within the last three years...Did I get a shock hunting the public lands here in CA! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hair-raisin-blue.gif
Starting to adapt and find my way though, just takes time. 95% of my hunts are solo.
Work as an Operator in a local chemical plant, so shift work cuts into most of my weekends but most Wednesdays I am hunting. Vacation and sick days are saved till hunting season.
Mostly hunt Grizzly Island and the Delta, a couple of trips are made to the Valley and/or Grasslands each year.

My name is Tim, I am 42 and am an accountant. I have a wife and 7 year-old daughter and live in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA.

I was born and raised in San Francisco, and the hunting legacy started in our family in the late 1800's/early 1900's when my great-great grandfather took the train up to the Sac Valley to hunt with friends of his that owned farms, and it's never stopped.

I grew up hunting Gray Lodge back in the glory days, Colusa, Delevan, The Grasslands, Tule Lake, we did it all. My dad would come home from work early on Friday, and I would have everything ready to go when he got home, and off we would go to the sweat line or to my grandfather's blind.

My folks live in Folsom, so I fly up about twice a month during the season (Gotta love Southwest Airlines!!), and then spend 10 days in early January hunting everyday.

I love hunting ducks and geese. The only thing I enjoy almost as much is steelheading with flies.

My name is Justin and I am 32. I live/teach in Elk Grove during the school year. In the summers I farm in Alturas. During the season it's hunting private land adjacent to Modoc NWR or run up LK/TL refuges.

Hard to beat 100's honkers on the deck on the opener. But hunting in the snow/ice is just as fun.

Of course, hunting the bypasses when it floods is a must.

Just migrated in http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wave-hello-yellow.gif Born/raised in Antioch, did a school and work stint in the Bay Area, and now live in Sactown. Haz Mat Inspector/Incident Responder. I'm still amazed weekly about how many duck hunters I meet while doing inspections in the greater Sac area. Great folks.

As far as duck hunting, I've been going since I was 5 and shooting since I was about 9-10. Shoot public areas from the Grasslands to the N. Sac Valley up through LK. I enjoy all aspects of chasing ducks. Mostly hunt with my Dad, Brother and Uncles and my 2 year old pup Reed. Good group of folks here, looking forward to reading some good stuff. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rock.gif

I like to stay abreast of waterfowl issues and enjoy an enlightening discussion. I hunt mostly public areas from just south of Highway 80 to just north of the Oregon border. I'll shoot rice but only if the wind is from the south and howling. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cross-fingers.gif Just so Rum knows when to call. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif I'm happily married with three young children. Glad to be here. I look forward to learning new things and contributing back to the sport when I can find the time.

Hey, another cool thing about the smilies on "this" site: You can go back and enter them where you please for added conjecture and emphasis. Way to go banana man. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana-man-yeah.gif

Tim, my condolences### So am I[/b]

It truly is a small world!

Like Full Sack, I am a lowly CMA. I am a manager in the Treasury and Trust Ops department for Ceridian. Ceridian is like ADP...H/R and payroll outsourcing. I have Thought about taking the CPA exam now that they have the non-attestation track. We'll see!

Full Sack...I feel your pain on SOx!!! I designed and implemented a complete test for our payroll and tax trust (our core business), completed about half the testing...then corp in MN tells me they are bringing in Deloitte for a more thorough test and we won't have an independence issue.....thanks guys!!! Could have told me that 6 months ago!!!

Oh, as far as schedules go...I have been with the company for 15 years and get 6 weeks of vacation of year. The wife only gets 2. Hmmmmm......4 weeks for hunting and fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My name is scott, I am 28, an original SPAV'er. I was born and raised in Cali and cut my teeth learning to duck hunt the UBB, Sac, Delevan, the River, etc.

Attended Chico State and finally graduated from there http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rock.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

Then, 5 1/2 years ago moved to South Carolina. After realizing THAT was a mistake I relocated to Colorado and now I've found my home!

I hunt ducks & geese primarily, and also all big game and other birds to fill in the gaps.

Been lurking here for some time, rarely post, but will start posting more as hunting season gets close.

I am Craig. Live in Penngrove, near Petaluma.

80% Rice, 15% Rat, 5% internet duck hunter.

I hunt ducks.

If it wasn't for the 60 seconds that preceeds all the shooting, I wouldn't be in the sport.

I must follow Riley!!

My name is Cliff and I've lurked here for awhile and thought it was time to post. I am a wildlife biologist. I've spent most of my career working on waterfowl and wetland mangement. I did my graduate work with funding through Delta Waterfowl and worked for two years on their predator removal study in North Dakota. I worked for almost three years for CWA and about another 3 for DFG in downtown Sacramento in the waterfowl and migratory upland gamebird program. I now live in West Sacramento and work for a nonprofit organization that works to protect and manage wildlife habitats that are required through environemental regulations (generally).

I have some serious issues with the way waterfowl are being managed and by the lack of people who are dedicated to waterfowl hunters and waterfowl hunting in decision making roles. My education is also in statistics and experimental design (I've had 7 graduate level courses), so I tend to be more demanding and critical of decisions that affect duck hunters. I don't know how to solve the problems we face, but I think the only way we can is by sticking together and trying to make sure that the forces that affect duck hunting are making the decisions that are best for us.

I hunt throughout the Central Valley on whatever public area I can get on, hunt some rice, and try to get up to Klamath Basin every year (and rarely a private club invitiation). I look forward to some good discussions.

Welcome Cliff,

We look forward to your educated input. Most of us are extremely passionate about waterfowl hunting which can sometimes cloud our thinking on what is best for the birds...myself included.
