OK folks!
Let's start hyping ourselves up for May! What are you gonna be shooting? Anybody holding out for trophy hogs? Who's driving what?

Cool to see some action here.
Most of ya'll have seen the pix of the Tactical Vehicle, although next time you see it, I'm not planning to be hanging off the side of a cliff!
I think I'm gonna try to take a pig with my Grandfather's old BAR in .308 this year. I don't usually like to switch guns, but I really would like to kill something with this "heirloom". I'll have the .44 on hip and the -06 Savage in the backseat, though.
I've never been a trophy hunter, and won't start now. If it's not sucking on mama, it's going in the cooler. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shootin-green.gif
Prohunter, I hope those reports are just a result of all the water and food up there during the wet months. Hopefully, by the time the May hunt rolls around, the water will be scarcer and the grass will be brown. Should concentrate the hogs and have them moving longer distances. We'll have to drop Elkron a note as the date gets closer, and see what he has to say. Maybe a little pre-hunt recon from the man who knows... or maybe not. It's up to him.

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif Tax season is over tonight, so I am ramping up for the JHO Ham Slam! It will be my second trip to Tejon. Bubba and I got two nice ones there last time. I am hoping for a repeat performance. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif
I will be shooting a Winchester Model 70 Featherlight (I will need it on those Tejon hills) with a back up S&W Sigma, .40 Cal. I debated taking my Remington 742, .308...but light won out.
I will not be trophy hunting, unless more than one pig http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pig-laughing.bmp crosses my path at the same time, then I will take a big tusker over a smaller one. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cross-fingers.gif

I'll be shooting (I hope) a Model 70 30-06. I'm not holding out for anything spectacular... if I see anything over 125lbs, it's taking a dirt nap. After shooting hogs 300+, I prefer the smaller oinkers. At least that's a good hedge for me failing to score. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif

There's a list started over in the Hog forum. If you wanted to collect it and paste over here, that would be cool.
There are a bunch of guys on here that I've never seen post... many of them with only one or two posts ever. And of course, there are some friends of members who got signed up too.
Anyway... I'm just ready to go shoot a hog.

Can't wait. Should have the new rifle broken in by then. I'll be bringing my new Sako Finnlight in .270. I'll bring the old reliable 300 win mag as back up.
I was gonna wait until the 21st then start this thread my self. Didn't want too seem too anxious. I am glad someone beat me to it, 'cause I can hardly wait! I will be in my F350 crewcab 4x4. Savage 110 synthetic 30'06. .44 on my hip (which I hope to get into range to use). I have not taken a hog before so I am not going to be picky.
I have a few questions for those of you who have done a PIG-O-RAMA before.
1.) If I get my pig on Friday, can I hang around for the rest of the weekend to just check out the ranch or drive some of the guys around or to help push a canyon or to help drink beer or be the camp cook or whatever? I live in Bakersfield so I could deliver a pig to the processor and be back round trip in 1-1/2 to 2 hours.
2.) Would it be feasible to haul my 29 foot fifth wheel up there. Are the roads on the ranch to the camping area relatively smooth / wide? How far from ranch headquarters? A/C, heater, fridge and a real bed might be nice after a long day humping the hills. It's either the fifth wheel or sleep in the truck.
3.) Is my F350 crewcab longbed too big to make it on some/many/most of the roads. I am assuming switchbacks for major elevation changes. I could bring a '67 bronco if necessary but then the 5th wheel stays at home.
So are we gonna do some sort of biggest pig prize or something. I know that for a "normal" PIG-O-RAMA Tejon awards $500 to the biggest pig.
I work in L.A. quite a bit and every time I drive past Tejon I get more excited. (saw several deer today)
I am sure that I will think of more and will post as things come up

Hi TMAN:
I don't know as much as a lot guys, but I could take a shot at answering some of your questions. Kids are in bed, so just looking for something like this to do.
1. Yes you can hang out after killing your hog.
2. Yes on the 5th wheel. There is a paved road from the gate to the camping area. No problem. There are no utilities at the campsite.
3. I think your longbed will be fine in most places. Maybe 90% of the roads will be do-able. There are some smaller tighter roads that might not be so accomodating. I think you will know which roads those are when you see them. No surprises to speak of on the primary and secondary roads. The Bronco is definitely more well-suited for Tejon.
Look forward to meetin' you.

TMan,
OneTrack answered your first three questions just fine. Your F350 isn't gonna be much different from my 3/4 ton Ram, and I don't have much problem when the roads are dry. Clearance and speed control are probably the biggest issues you'll deal with. There are tight turns and steep climbs, but they're all do-able when the roads are dry (as they should be in May). Sure, there are a couple of jeep trails too small for a real truck, but you need to use at least a little boot-leather on this trip. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif
As to "big pig" prizes and such...
Tejon Ranch will not be sponsoring any prizes for this hunt, since it's 100% JHO and not a Tejon event. I did get Barbara to confirm that we will have use of the ranch scale and an operator, so we will be weighing all hogs killed during the hunt.
Jesse and I have talked about some possibilities, but at this point let's just say, "be ready for surprises." More to come on that later, as we get stuff ironed out. I would add that it could be worthwhile to stay at least through Saturday night, even if you tag out early.
And this is to everyone...
If you bring a camper and generator, think about bringing a sound-damping box for the generator, especially if you're planning to run it at night. I imagine a bunch of guys will be up around the fire a good part of the evening, but some folks also like to turn in early. Be considerate if you're running generators in camp. They're pretty noisy.
On the other side of that coin, if you're the type who sacks out at sunset, you may want to consider a set of earplugs. There's lots of room around camp, and I don't think it's ever been extremely loud, but a nice set of soft, foam plugs can be the difference between aggravation and a good night's sleep. There will invariably be at least a handful of folks enjoying adult beverages and the accompanying fellowship into the smaller hours.

Personally, I think that beyond firewood, there's not much requirement for communal type planning. It gets a little helter skelter with everyone hunting hard all day, so trying to plan group dinners and such is probably a losing proposition. Of course, anyone who wants to plan group cooking is welcome to take the lead. I'll be there with plate and fork in hand. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif
Of course, anyone who wants to bring extra goodies and beer/soda/etc. is more than welcome to do so. It's always nice to share. I usually throw an extra 6 pack on ice, even though I don't drink much beer. If I get a chance to make another batch, I may have a bag of elk jerky along as well.

I just got a note from Barbara at Tejon. Something I hadn't considered was what time everyone should be checking in. It seems like every year at the POR I'm late (heck, it's a 6.5hr drive), so I wasn't aware of her preferred policy.
Anyway, what I'd like to do is try to start checking in at 1000 on Friday, May 21, and hope to have everyone present and accounted for by 1200. I know that some folks may need to make exceptions, so I'd really like to know who you are and what time you think you'll be arriving. If the majority would like to start checking in a little later...say, 1200, then let's get consensus and I can try to arrange the plans accordingly.
If you're going to be really late, then I'll likely have to sacrifice hunting time to get you squared away... and that would suck (the price I pay for organizing, I suppose). Needless to say, I'd prefer not to have to do that, so let's make the arrangements NOW.
I am meeting with Barbara on May 10 to hand in the paperwork, and would like to work out all of these details with her then. So if you don't speak up now, you'll have to deal with whatever we arrange.
More to come as the date gets closer!

But just to be sure, make sure you have your insurance and registration info when you check in. I'll be sure to ask about that at my meeting with Barbara, so at least she'll be prepared. You're not the only one to ask similar questions.
Also, for you other guys. If, by chance, you end up driving to the hunt in something that you didn't put on your sheet... make sure you have all the proper paperwork with you. Registration, insurance card, and current tags.

Rancho,
From the sounds of things, based on the last two PORs, you WANT me to get in there early and scatter the hogs.
Actually, though, I'm not really the one pushing for early. That would be Barbara, and the concern is more that we get everybody processed in early in the day, so that no one has to wait around at the office to process latecomers. I've already been alerted that it's possible that at least one hunter will be arriving after 1900... and I'm not sure how we're gonna deal with that.
As far as how early we're allowed on the Ranch...
As I said, I've never been early for a POR, but the "official" start time has always been noon on Friday. That said, I know that when I arrived at noon last March, most of the crowd was already there and in the woods. So I'm guessing that as soon as your paperwork is processed, you'll be allowed to go to the gate. Of course, one of the details we're (Barbara and I) are still ironing out is who will be manning the gate. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to get consensus on the arrival times.
For those who live close and are offering assistance... stay tuned. I may very well take you up on that after I have a chance to talk to Barbara and get the details squared away.

Not with the targets I get...As you can see, I can get pretty close to those little squares if I'm lucky enough.. It's with the pigs.
Try as I might, I can't seem to get the hogs to stand still long enough to draw a little square on them, so's I know where to aim at.

We can have fires in a fire ring. I think Brent and his group brought one last time we did a May hunt. I can't remember who brought the fire ring in March.
It's looking like the fire is gonna be more a social focal point than a necessity this year.

I think campfires are technically forbidden. My first few trips up there, I asked permission to use a portable enclosed fire ring. They were cool with that.

Can someone clear up this vehicle fire inspection thing for me. I don't recall reading about it in any of the paperwork we got about the hunt. We are driving in a F250 Diesel, reg. for everyday hwy driving.
Does this still need to be fire inspected? If so, do all CDF stations perform these tests? Do they give us a peice of paper that certifies the vehicle for entrance into Tejon? I don't want to get there and have any problems.
Thanks in advance for clearing this up.

On page 1 of the "Hunting regulations on Tejon Ranch Company Lands" info it says under Part B of Vehicles, "Exhaust system inspection" "During the fire season the Kern County FD must inspect and approve the exhaust system of each vehicle before it may enter Tejon lands...."
So as I understand it, even our daily drivers have to be inspected & approved. Hope this helps.

All you do is swing by the fire station, which is real close and the come out and give it a 5 minute or less inspection. If you have a diesel, they immediately sign off on it. They give you a sticker for your window after the inspection. I think it is good for the year.

The inspection takes a few minutes. The station is only a few hundred yards from the south gate. They will check your tail pipe for excessive heat, and will check under the hood for a gas or exhaust leak. They will also want to see a shovel and a fire extinguisher.

The fire extinguisher and shovel are technically requirements. The first time I went, I didn't have the extinguisher, but nobody noticed. Save yourself a potential hassle though and toss a small ABC fire extinguisher in your truck... it's a good idea anyway. And if you use your vehicle for much off-road stuff, you've probably already got a shovel aboard.
A solid first-aid kit is also a real good idea, since it's a pretty good hop from Tejon to any major medical facility. In addition to the dangers from skinning knives, twisted ankles, firearms, and boar tusks, Mr. No-shoulders will probably be out and about in the daytime. A snakebite kit could be a good thing to include in that first aid rig.
Other items to consider...
Drinking water - Lots of it. Stay hydrated! Remember... piss clear (or as you military guys probably heard in survival school, maintain CCU... clear, copious urine). Other beverages are great, particularly the adult kind. But those are for after the hunt, and they do next to nothing to restore body fluids.
Knife sharpeners - If you've skinned a hog before, you'll understand. If not, well, trust me on this one. You'll want to keep it sharp, and that's a trick when cutting through pig skin. I usually also carry spare skinning knives.
LOTS OF ROPE - When you drop that big boy down in a hell-hole, you have a choice. You can go down there and drag that sucker up by sheer manpower... or you can drop down a couple hundred yards of rope and drag him up with horsepower. Seriously, you won't be over-equipped with 1000 feet of rope.
A sense of humor - Hey, everybody doesn't tag out. There's no sense getting bent out of shape if you don't get your hog. Keep on grinning, and enjoy the fellowship and experience... as well as the opportunity to hunt one of the nicest pieces of property in CA.
There's more, but most of it is common sense. And it's not like you're trapped at Tejon. If you run out of vital stuff, you can always run over to Lebec.

I wouldn't recomend a little extinguisher for anything because by the time you walk your way into a vehicle fire the small amount of powder runs out about the wrong time. Seen it many times. Get a big one and keep it handy, don't bury it in the rear of your back seat or trunk. The faster you get on that fire the better. I have mine within arms reach from my seat in case I'm pinned in. Seen that a few times also. Also get it inspected every year. One time I grabbed an extuingisher and waded in on a fire and a small puff of powder was all I got. Then it was "Feet don't fail me now" mode.
Most docs now say for snake bite just get the nearest ER. No tourniquet, ice etc. Snake bite kits are a waste of money IMO. Have someone kill and bring the snake if you can but most are rattler bites here in SoCal. Careful handling the snake too, them fangs work even when the snake is dead.

If it's too big to handle with the little extinguisher, then somebody's on their own. The only vehicle fire I've had to put out was a little electrical deal and the small extinguisher I had worked fine.
Of course, I won't argue that bigger is better, but I honestly don't consider mine to be survival gear. It's there to be legal, and in a pinch for those stupid little camp-side things that sometimes happen.
At any rate... to the gist of it... the extinguisher is required so you should have something.
As to snakes... if I can find a rattler over 3', he's gonna need a Speckmisser-bite kit. I'm still looking for that new hatband.
Wmidbrook-
There is not a whole lot in Lebec. There is a good sized truck stop with a 24/7 restaraunt. I think there is a mexican restaraunt, Jack In The Box, and an AM/PM. Not sure of any bars. I think the nearest motels are in Gorman or a wide spot in the road known as Grapevine. Both have restaraunts. Grapevine has a Denny's, truck stops, and fast food joints. I don't think there are any bars. Grapevine is sort of divided into sections, Laval Rd. and Grapevine. There is a motel right at the base of the mountain before you start up toward the ranch coming from the North. There is a Mexican restaraunt there that might have a bar. I am pretty sure there is a new motel at Laval Rd. Check your tejon paperwork. I think they recommend a couple of motels. Hope this helps. -Tony

It is definately a good idea to have some means of putting out a fire fast...whether a blanket, shovel, McCloud tool or water. But, it's hard to beat an extinguisher alright--more "firepower". Just suprised that it's Tejon policy....guess too many folks park with their catalytic converters nested in dried out grasses these days to leave things to chance. Maybe insurance rates are adjusted favorably with such a policy.
Can't say I'd ever thought of keeping an extinguisher within arms reach in a vehicle. That's one more risk managed alright.
And I may be wishing I had bought a spool of rope after it's all said and done. Guess my legs and pack frame might get a work-out (I hope). Don't forget flashlights either~!
I haven't gone the Warne winch route yet, but do always have a tow strap, hefty come-along, jack, saw, ax and shovel when 4x4'ing along with spare tire, & a can or two of spare air along with an assortment of tools.
First aid kits are always a must along with the compass, water filtering device, water, flashlight, sharpener, spare knife, lense cleaning tissue and 'guttin' gloves' amongst other things in my day pack.
Anyway, it'll be nice to be there in a couple weeks. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs-up-ani.gif

That Mexican restaurant in Lebec is awesome. It looks like a hole in the wall from the outside. But, inside the food and service are incredible. When we go to the scales at noon to weight our hogs, we'll drive in for some carne asada.
Yes, the grass grows high in the middle of the two tracks. You will smell it burning under your truck. It's an unsettling feeling, even after passing inspection.
MId - I bought a 600 yd. spool of 1/4 inch rope at Harbor Freight for $19.99. Unbelievably, this little quarter inch stuff works. I've given it the ultimate hog pullin' test. After a few hogs, you have to throw it away. But, for $20, it's way worth the investment. I would have paid $100 for somebody to hump out my last hog. Nasty.
Oh yah!

Prohunter,
If you bring a different vehicle, you're SOL!!!
OK, not really. Bring all the insurance and registration info with you when you check in. I'll probably be working the desk with Barbara, and we'll get you squared away. Don't send anything else at this point, since I'm gonna be taking all the paperwork I have now (and the checks) to Tejon on Monday. That's right boys.. validate your checking accounts, since the checks will be going to the bank next week.
Bill, I'll probably be checking out that Mexican restaurant and hotel on Sunday night, so I'll provide some recon after the fact. I'm heading down there on the bike, so I'll be READY for a good drink and a soft bed by the time I hit the 5 hour mark. Then again, the way I ride, it may only be 3 hours. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif
As far as rope, I haven't used it for this purpose, but parachute cord has a breakpoint of over 300 pounds (if I remember correctly). It stretches like crazy, but it'll haul a normal-sized hog out of a hole easier than your arms will. You can get a 1000 spool from Cabelas for $35. Shop around (try US Cavalry) and you may find it cheaper.
I have several hundred feet of 3/8" cotton-poly rope that will haul an elk. It costs a little more, but if you shop it out you can find a good price. The first time you have a hog down in a Tejon Hell-hole, it'll MORE than pay for itself.

TMan, OneTrack, and Speckmisser, thanks for the info. The Mex place sounds good to me.
I figure I had better get a good night's rest on Thursday night in case I run a sleep deficit over the weekend.
Speaking of rope....On a commercial fishing vessel (longliner) up in AK, we shot a feral cow on one of the aleutian islands. From the boat on anchor, the downed cow was 1/2 mile up a hill. We used 5/8ths inch nylon ('cause it sinks) ran it up to the cow, put the other end in the hydraulic line hauler.....man that rope would stretch almost pencil thin and then the cow would almost fly thru the air about 50 ft....this went on 'til the cow got to the beach and then it was smooth haulin' her in. Swung a boom out over the water, hauled it onboard and started to butcher. Gosh, it was funny watching that cow periodically slingshot towards the boat in 50 foot hops.

One quick answer... Yes.
Seriously, you can certainly cut up your hog and pack it out if you want. That's one approach. Cutting up a critter in the field is kinda a pain, though. I find it much easier to do my cutting in camp, with a cold beer and a meat pole.
Since there are lots of roads at Tejon, a couple hundred yards of rope makes retrieval much easier. If you can get close with the vehicle, just tie off and drag away.
Last year, I wasn't in a place where we could get the truck in, and it took some SERIOUS humping to get that fat sow out of the hell hole (Thanks again, Scott... I definitely owe you!). But the year before, my brother and I had hogs down in the canyon... with the winch and a whole lot of rope, the recovery was a relative breeze. In my opinion, it's definitely the right way to go.
Other suggestions include a sled or dragging blanket. Heavy canvas works good, and rolls up for easy carrying. Anything to break the friction between the hog body and the ground would make the drag a lot easier. They just don't drag all that easy. I have a plastic game sled that I forgot to bring last year. Sure would've made that trip easier. You can believe I won't forget it again! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif

OK fellas!
Just got home last night from meeting with Barbara at Tejon.
First of all, the weather was awesome! If we can have a couple of days like yesterday for our hunt, it'll be perfect. Nice, hazy/clear day with temps in the low 60s at mid-day.
We covered a lot of info, and I'm sure I won't remember it all. BUT... here's what I do remember.
If you are hunting with non-JHO members, make sure they get this information.
Check-in:
We're gonna start checking folks in at 1000 on May 21. We'd like to have everyone done and ready to go to the gate by 1200. The process will be very similar to the regular PORs, so many of you are already familiar with how it works. Meet at the Tejon Headquarters (Ft. Tejon exit from I-5).
JHO Pro-Staffers will be manning the gates, and WE WILL BE THE ONLY WAY IN OR OUT after check-in. So far I have confirmed two likely late arrivals. Barbara and I will be in touch with these folks to make sure they get signed in and through the gate.
IF YOU DON'T THINK YOU WILL BE THERE BY NOON... please contact me NOW and let me know so we can make arrangements. Barbara will not wait all day to sign you in, and if your paperwork isn't done, you won't hunt. Maybe if you're lucky, you can get signed in on Saturday. LET ME KNOW NOW, and arrangements can probably be made. Otherwise... you take your chances. My phone number is on the application paperwork, or you can email me.
Weigh-in:
In accordance with Tejon rules, all hogs are to be weighed in. Since there are so many of us, the ranch has agreed to provide a weighmaster on Saturday and Sunday. Weigh-in periods will be between 1100 and 1300.
For those who are hunting Sunday evening, we'll need to arrange to have a scale in camp to weigh your hogs. Does anyone have a good scale? We'll need it until the end of the hunt on Sunday night.
Check Out:
OK, dig this PLEASE!
I am responsible for making sure everyone who signed in gets signed out. Since I and my "agents" will be the only ones with keys, you will have to go through one of us to get off the ranch. We'll adjust the logistics for this as necessary. Please don't leave (or try to leave) without contacting one of us. If Sunday night comes, and there's no checkmark beside your name, a search party will be organized and there will be some very unhappy searchers if you are not located. We'll be even more unhappy if it turns out you were home, sitting in front of the TV while we were out there looking for you.
As to check-out time....
If you are finished hunting, please plan to leave by around 1400 on Sunday afternoon. Those who have not tagged out can hunt until the end of shoot time on Sunday. However, let's try to be considerate and keep someone posted on WHERE you'll be hunting. That way, if you're the last one in the woods, someone can try to find you, and help you get that big boar out of the hellhole.
One of the JHO staffers (likely me) will have to stay until EVERYONE is accounted for and checked out of the gate.
Finally, a little admin here. According to the April 30 list from Bob Boggs, the following people are NOT insured. If you are on this list, and know you sent Boggs your money, then you need to contact their offices and find out what's going on. If you have NOT sent your money, then you may want to get with FedEx and send it of NOW. No insurance= No hunting.

Hey guys,
Barbara said that the list they receive is not always accurate. That's why I wanted you guys to confirm. It would suck to get all hyped up for this hunt, and then find something stupid like this to keep you out.
Just trying stay pro-active... address the problems BEFORE they become problems.
Hronk, will you and/or your scale be able to stay at the ranch until Sunday night? That's when we'll need it... to collect data from the last couple of hunters. I can't remember how far away you live. If you need to leave earlier, I'd be glad to hold the scale and fed-ex it back to you after I get home.
As Scott said, you will definitely need a cooler big enough to hold your pig. The only facilities we'll have available will be porta-potties in the camping area, and the meat poles. Everything else is up to us.
Fairchase, if you need any logistics support on the local end, sing out. You get the Long-Distance award, so if you need any help with arrangements let me know.
Finally, as to hotels...
If you're coming from the north on Thursday night, I'd strongly recommend getting your hotel at one of the Bakersfield Exits (Hwy 46 or 58). That still leaves you an hour or so from the ranch, but you have plenty of time to arrive by 1000. The prices are a lot more reasonable than the hotels at the Grapevine. Rack rate at the Best Western on Laval Road (about 20 minutes from the ranch) was $75/night for a SINGLE! The hotels back at Hwy 58 were advertising between $26 and $35 a night. To me, that makes it worth the extra drive time.

Speck: The scale is yours as long as you need it. You can send it whenever. We will probably be some of the late ones unless we both fill out early. See you next Friday.....hronk

Jesse,
When you say he got "pissed off", how do you mean? That's not very professional, nor is it a good way to encourage repeat business. I'd think he'd be happy to have so many people sending him money. Maybe he just thinks he can take cash without having to deal with customers? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rolleyes-green.gif

He is there to provide a service wich by the way might have some one on one with a client every now and again and he gets frustrated but still cashes your check. He obviously doesn't understand for one second the feeling of a hunt and what it has to offer. He has the ability to pull the plug on every one of our hunts and it sounds like he doesn't care. Hey all,
I don't know who John Walker is hunting with, but I need to get in touch with him before the hunt. Can anyone get him to send me an email, or provide me with contact info for him?
Thanks.
ALSO... this is last call for anyone who doesn't think they can be at the gate by 1000 on Friday, May 21. If you, or anyone in your party cannot be there at this time, I NEED TO KNOW!
This hunt is not the same as the POR, where the Tejon staff operates the gates. On this hunt, there will be a couple of keys in our group (one for me, and one or two distributed to trusted volunteers). If you want in or out, one of us will have to open the gate to let you go.
When we finish the check-in (appx 1200), I'm opening the gate to let the crew in and then I will be heading to the camping area, six miles away. If you are NOT there, and if you haven't made arrangements, you will be on your own until one of us comes back to the gate... possibly AFTER hunting hours on Friday night.
I hate to make this sound so dire, but I don't think it's too much to ask. If you or anyone in your party don't think you can make it on time, PLEASE drop me an email NOW so we can make sure you get checked in and so there is someone available to get you through the gate.

Anyone planning on going to the range this Sunday? For any of the locals in my area I will be trying to get up to Fish Canyon range this Sunday to confirm I haven't knocked anything out of wack. Anybody interested in joining in on slinging acouple 50 to 200yds out? If anybody is interested maybe I'll take the shotgun and shoot a round of 25 also. To any of you that are planning on not checking the gun before the hunt I got one word of advice, DON'T. I missed several oportunities on a white tail hunt in Alabama because of it. DON'T have the regrets I had. It only takes one or two rounds to be sure. I've got to work tomorrow so I won't have the opportunity to do any scouting for next weekend's hunt but a fellow JHO'er will be there and informed me he would drop me a line on where the pigs are hanging out. Scott,
I haven't had any bad dreams about the Roadmisser Ridge episode, so that's behind me now. Just dreams of hogs.
Went to the range for a while today. If I miss a hog, it won't be because of the rifle. Wish I'd had the digital camera to take photos of the groups. I had 12 shots from the -06 in about a 2" cluster. My first group of four had two touching, one about 3/4" out, and a flyer about an inch and a half.
Also shot the .308, since I'm hoping to use it this trip. The first few shots with 150 gr Winchester Supremes gave me a 2.5" group. Not so great. The rifle shoots mil-surp FMJs like a dream (close to MOA with occasional sub-MOA groups), so I know it's capable of more. I had a box of Remington Core-lokts, 180 gr so I figured, why not? WOW! That fancy rifle seems to LOVE cheap ammo!
Anyway...
On another note.... PAGING SCOTT HOUNSHELL!
I need you to verify your hunting license number before Friday!

And now.. to while away the hours...
A pome.
I thought that I might never see
a hog hiding 'neath an old oak tree
A tree that in the spring might wear
a nest of condors in her hair
Then I went to Tejon ranch
And saw no condors on a branch
But hogs I saw, that's no lie
And one of those hogs, he did die
"Well that was fun," is what I said.
To turn that piggie on his head
I would like to do it again
I didn't know how or when
But I booked again for March this time
and weather foul, is what I did find
I slipped and slid across the road
But desperately on, I did go
Perseverance pays, I was told
Hunting for hogs or mining gold
And in the dusk, the second day
A big ol' sow got in my way
I ate her up, but longed for more
So in late spring, 2004
I'm going back to badger pass
To kick a little piggie ....

So thankful we are to thee
longing to find that oak tree
To bring us electric souls
looking for water holes
Many thanks cannot express
from us members’ of the Jess
We will gather for the Slam
and feast on some killer ham
Faces and names will merge as one
as we embrace the setting sun.
Tales of victory, tales of woe
will be shared as embers glow.
The night will wane with a snore
only to wake at that hour of four
Coffee will fill the air
as we seek that piggie lair
There are two to thank
as solid as any bank
each with a vision
and a special mission
One gives us a place to play
the other a hunting May
We are the branches that you see
JHO is the trunk of that tree
We will seek the beast
Some to the East
Some to the West
North, South for the rest
Under the banner of JHO
for allowing us the Show.
All gain from the viewing
for what we are doing.
I say Hear, Hear
those far and near
Give thanks to that Misser
Give thanks to that Jesse
I say again, raise your glass
and lets kick a little piggie ....

Guttin' a hog is fun. If you don't have anybody around that can help you right away, just throw it in the back of the truck and go find somebody. I wouldn't leave it ungutted for more than a half hour if it's hot outside. You want to gut that thing as quickly as possible. But, it can wait a few if you can find some guidance. Now, if you're at the bottom of some mountain, and the truck is at the top, you better get busy.
It helps to be on a slant with the head uphill. You might prop a few rocks or logs on the outside of the hog to prevent it from flopping over on it's side.
Zip the belly open. Split the rib cage too for easier access. Then, get down in there and wrap your arms around the big pile of guts, with knife in hand. Cut the membrane that attachs to the backbone. That will release the entire glob of inards. Also, cut the windpipe as close as you can to the head. Grab the windpipe and pull all that shit out of the hog. Then, tip the hog over and get rid of anyblood that's pooled up. Move the hog away from the nasty pile, and clean up the hog. Trim away any shot up meat. Try not to get a bunch of dirt and stuff in the cavity. Keep it as clean as possible.
Carry a bone saw or a hatchet, so you can break thru the pelvic, soze you can remove the entire pooper and it's contents. Also, don't puncture the bladder. Actuallly, try not to puncture any of the organs.
It's fun. I love sittin' on a log and watchin' somebody else gut a hog. It's even better when you have a beer in your hand.

As a sidenote to OneTrack's how-to....if you're going to have a very long drag, you might not want to split the pelvis and ribcage. It exposes alot more meat to dirt, leaves, etc......The cleaner your carcass, the better it's going to taste.

Maybe I'm just a perv (well, actually, I'm pretty sure I am, but I digress).... anyway, when I kill a boar, I flip him over on his back and grab his schlong in my hand (kinda like you're grabbing the throttle on a motorcycle), squeeze it, and push HARD into his abdomen. This will cause a whole lotta piss to squirt out (so don't get in the way). This helps keep the meat from getting spoiled. For skinning hogs, nothing works better than one of them razor knives you find at Home DEpot. Get the one with the big handle and break off blades. It gets dull and you just break off the dull part and keep on skinning. About $5.99 last time I bought one.
Forecast looks good. It was very nice up at Tejon Saturday when we had cloud cover. Once it burned off it got pretty hot in the afternoon.
I played back some tape of some ground squirrel shooting this past weekend at Tejon and there was a big ole rattler crawling right by the truck as I was making a squeak dance with my bad shooting. Poor squeak, a rattler on his left and me on his right trying to take his head off with a .22 mag. I never saw the snake until I replayed the video. He must of been going down to the creek I was next to get a drink since it was blazing hot in the afternoon. Watch where you put your feet and hands. Snake chaps might even be handy in high grass.
I'll be bringing some shirts, hats and stickers in anybody wants to buy them there.

deadducks, follow the signs or the JHO stickers and you can't miss it. The Lebec fire station is off of Lebec so it is a no brainer if your coming North up the 5fwy. Going South it gets alittle tricky. It's on the East side of the frwy as is the Lebec gate going into Tejon so when you get off on Lebec going South on 5fwy turn left. Then hang another left on to the overpass bridge you will see going to the other side. The Fire Station is on your left and the frwy will be on your right. Good Luck. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif

Maybe it's me but does that mean your coming from the South going North or from the North going South? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif
Anyway, if your going South to get into the area then no you will not see the fire station untill you get off the frwy and follow my directions. When your at the fire station you can throw a rock and hit the cars in the North bound slow lanes if it pleases you. I don't recomend doing this though since there seems to be a Highway Patrol man that likes to sit right across from the station facing the North bound traffic with his radar on. You should see how fast he can flip a Uey and get on that 5frwy. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif If your coming up the 5fwy you will get off just after the rest stop on Lebec and you need to start hitting the brakes imediately or you will pass the fire station on your right and don't forget about the Highway Patrol mans radar on you left. Good Luck. You will probably be getting back on the frwy for acouple of miles going more North to get to the ranch headquarters on your right.

He said just be patient, if their not there then they are out on a call and should be back soon. He mentioned another station but I'm not familiar with that one.
