View Full Version : JHO FLY FISHING TRIP, BISHOP CA

PIGIG

We should all get a JHO FLY FISHING trip going for the early spring, maybe go to the Yuba River or down south to the Owens River or go up north to the Pit River.
I guess the pit will have to wait until may.

I grew up in Burney Calif. right next door to the Pit and Fall river there is not to much water up there I have not fished so if any one is interested in a trip lets get together.
I am by no means an expert but I bet I can loose more flys than you can.
Any one up for the challenge.

i might have to take you up on that offer once summer gets a little closer. my rods and reels are up in montana waiting for me. im planning on going up early june to pick em up, and of course make sure they still work. i havent got a chance to flyfish the pit or yuba, but definitely want to do it. it would be great to get some people from this site goin on something like that.

I'd be up for a 3-day'er in the Eastern Sierra (Owens). I usually stay at French Camp, just above Tom's.

Let me know what dates you are thinking about and I'll check my schedule. I usually like to head up there in late June myself. I usually go up with some guys here at work, but they have been flaky lately. I was thinking about heading up there alone (you can always rely on your self, right??), but company is always good.

Pigig, I saved your site to my favorites. that's a nice little site that you have.

The eastern Sierra would be a good place for the north and south JHOers to get together. Lots of good places to camp. Set up a date and place. PIGIG do you have a favorite CG?

If we all meet say near sacramento for those that what to come from the north and some form the south Sacramento is about mid way not quite but close enough, if you are talking about going to the yuba i have a littls spot just south of the Hwy 20 bridge plust there are a couple of campgrounds right there. One is devloped the other is a little primitive.
exaclty where did you have in mind i could go on for days here!!!

School is out for me on June 11th. I want to spend some time at home relaxing for a few days, but after that I'll be up for a trip. The Owens would be good, but I'd rather try the Yuba since I've never been there. Around June 18th would be good.

If the dates work I would be in for a fishing trip. Owens sound good to me. However, if I've got the time, up above Saco sound nice also. Keep me posted.

I'll be out of town the weekend of the 19th but I can make the 26th of June weekend.

Let's do the Owen's River since it in the middle.

Let's pick a weekend soon and I'll get a banner in the forum rotation to help get the event info out.

We can then do other trips in July and August too. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif

just so you boy's from down south know not sure how the heat is in the summer down there but if we go from sacramento north you can expect temp's above 110 Degrees from valley floor up to 3000 feet. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif

What would the owens river be like at that time of year?

hronk
04-13-2004, 06:18 AM
High flows, hot weather... You'd be better off to gain some altitude and fish above 7000 ft level. Like anywhere from Crowley, north. Lots of lakes and streams and some very good hike in water....hronk

Colusaduckhunter
04-13-2004, 10:16 AM
That's why I camp near Tom's at French Camp. It's a lot cooler at 8000 ft. than down on the lower Owens. If I want to fish the Lower owens, I can drive back down.

I camped at Pleasant Valley the first year I went up there in the early 80's and it was hotter than $#@%. I'll never do that again! If you really want cool, we can camp higher up at Rock Creek Lake. I would say temp wise it in the 70's and 80's in late June. Down in the Valley (Bishop) it's a lot hotter.

Hey Hronk...if we come up are you going to fish with us???? It would be nice to go with a local. We would never expect you to give up your secret spots, but it would be nice to go with someone that really knows the area.

I'll check my schedule (read as: verify with the wife) but sounds great to me. I'll keep an eye on the thread over the next little while. It's been a while since I have spent much time fly fishing, I used to quite a bit but not much lately, so I would love to do some.

I plan on showing up though I do work the weekend of the 28th. I just don't know if I'm on swing or day shift. No secret spots to speak of...fishing-wise. Now you start talking hunting and all bets are off. I'll have my boat Crowley licensed, so maybe we can get a few of you out there if you don't have tubes. Hot Cr. is also an option if you like using really little stuff. I start with 20's and work on down (size-wise) from there. The gorge can be great but very hot. I hear all of the stories about the Rattle snakes down there but have only seen one in 30-some years. Try to make at least one of your days up here a week-day as the week-ends can get crowded the farther into summer that you get....hronk

rock creek is a great place to fish and camp. i went there for a week about 2 years ago and had a blast. the only problem is camping. it has a very small campground. maybe 10 sites or so..... when i went, i tried to make a reservation, but they said it was first come first serve. anyways i get there, and all the sites have reservation cards on them. i made a stink to the lady that runs it and she got me a site. i know there is a campground on rock creek probably a mile or two before the lake that is bigger. maybe we could work something like that out. the 26th sounds good for me too, i would be down for that. i have a small boat too, so i wouldnt mind fishing some of the lakes.

When I fish that area, I usually camp at the campground just north of Bishop east of the hwy. It's only 3 or 4 bucks a night. The only problem is that if you are on the outhouse side of the river, it really smells. If I were to fish anywhere up there other than the Owens it would be either the Gorge or Hot Creek. The San Joaquin is an option too. I am good for the 26th. How many days do we want to go for?

I usually like to get up Thursday afternoon myself and fish that afternoon. I think the weekend of the 26th sounds great, although I will probably head up on the 24th.

Dave (BigHorn), the campground you're talking about isn't French Camp is it? I believe that's the first one out of Bishop on top of the grade. Hopefully you aren't talking about Pleasant Valley Campground...it's way too hot!

I've never camped at Rock Creek, so I guess we need to decide where we are going to camp. We may need to get more than one spot because they are so anal about allowing only so many cars per site (plus they charge for extra vehicles too). I'm not averse to carpooling with any other SoCaler's. I can drive or pitch in for gas. I drive a Honda Accord so it's a bit tight storage wise....Hey, you can laugh at that, but I bet my little Accord has logged more off road time than most people's 4x4 trucks!!

Hey Pigig:

I'm there. I also have two firm commitments from two of my work buddies that usually make the annual trek with me. I am waiting on a commitment from a third regular. I'll reserve a campsite for us near you.

I have never camped at Rock Creek CG, are there some sites that are better than others, i.e. shade, noise, etc.?????

I'll wait for your response before I book.

Thanks,

Well lets not be our self's here guys
I am really not one for calling life a different color than what it is, I have taught him life is what you make it and you only get out of it what you put into it. But on a lighter note the woman last night caught wind of our trip and demanded to be included and make it a family event.
But there are no worry here guys she can hold here own trust me.

Dave glad to see you are on board.

I need a little help form the locals over there, what flies are good and what size!!!
I have not tied any thing since last year, sure I still have 300 files left but if there are not the right ones I may as well have none.

Just kidding. If my wife could handle sleeping in a tent she would want to come too. Her idea of roughing is definitely Motel 6.

Looks like we have a pretty good crew. I imagine that we may need to bring our hip waders....the BS is probably going to get mighty deep that weekend. Maybe I'd better bring my chest waders instead!!!!

Cecil,

I only know about flies for Hot Creek which I am going to spend a good amount of time at. Green Caddis larvae 14-18, pupae 14-18, emergers and adults 14-18 EHC, X caddis, etc. PMDs 16, Copper Johns 18-20, pheasant tails 18-20. I use a secret weapon fly with a bead head and simple peacock body on a scud hook that works really well. I'm also making up some new patterns. We'll see how they work.

Colusaduckhunter

You need to visit the Mecca of Flyfishing...Bob Marriott's in Fullerton on Orangethorpe. Here's the link for their website:

Marriotts (http://www.bobmarriotts.com/)

They have everything and more. If you haven't been, you need to go. I just need to warn you that you'd better bring a lot of $$$$$$ because it's just so hard to walk out of there without buying some cool stuff.

If you don't want to endure that type of temptation, then I would try a Sports Chalet. They usually have a decent selection of flies. IMO, the original Sports Chalet in La Canada has the best selection, although it's been a while since I have been there, so not sure if it's changed.

If you live in the OC area, His and Her Flyshop also has a great selection of flies. They are at 1566 Old Newport in Costa Mesa. I think between 15th and 16th Streets. Plus they are really nice people.

Good luck!

Tim

Guys if your driving through Bishop you need to stop at Brocks or Culvers tackle shop. If I don’t stop at one of these shops as we drive through Bishop my wife asks if I’m asleep or sick. They will know just what is working and what water is producing best. As much time and money that I’ve spent in Bob Marriott's I still believe that the prices in the shops in Bishop are just as good if not better. I know at Culvers as of last year if you bought 12 or more flies there was a price break.

Unfortunately I have a wedding to attend that weekend other wise I’d drag a few bodies along with me. That is in the time frame of my father/daughter fly fishing weekend. Maybe I’ll go up the weekend before with Danielle and have a report for you guys.

Colusaduckhunter

You're right BT, in fact there should be a law that says if you don't stop at Brock's you get a ticket!!!

The KMart at the edge of town used to sell flies in their sporting goods dept. Don't know if they still do or not, but they were good flies at Kmart prices!

Definitely post up on your results. Have a great time with your daughter!

BDB, you can certainly join us at #20 if you would like. The only problem I forsee is that we'll have 2 vehicles and I think that's the limit for our size spot. I have never camped at Rock Creek CG, only French Camp down the hill by Tom's, so I am not sure if they have overflow parking or not. Does anyone else know??????

I know they are pretty anal about too many cars down at French Camp, not sure about Rock Creek.

Well, I missed the Shooting Fair this weekend but I felt it was a fair trade.

Friday - noon at Intake II - small, sluggish planters that were plenty easy, limits all around; about 4pm we up to South Lake - LOTS of 10" trout in the corners of the dam and at the point just past the dock, fair fighting with easy limits

Saturday - 6:30 @ Upper Twin in Mammoth; tubed from the drop off to the waterfall. Flyfishers had limits in 2 hours, worm guys in thirty minutes. Spinners worked well by the inlet for about 1 hour. Same 10" size but these guys fought REAL hard. 11am up to Lake George - we never do real well here but it's a scenic stop. Tubers got 2 -3 each and shore guys the same. Two bears stalked us at just past noon. They cruised the shoreline stealing stringers of trout. No fear at all - one was 150# and the other looked double that. 4pm we hit Alligator point at Crowley. Walked the rocks and threw out crawlers while sucking down a few. Pretty windy but averaged 4 each. Most were 13"+ but two came in at 20".

Sunday - back to Crowley. The water is way up from a few years ago. All of us drove to Green Banks. Sorta slow but when I left at noon, most had limits. Lots of Sacramento Perch on this side. We had six or seven right at 20" and the rest were 13"+.

Weather was on the hot side, but a nice weekend for sure. We had 14 in our group and were pretty much split between flies and bait. Neither side could claim victory on the fish count. Big trout caught at Upper Twin on an Olive Matuka.

found the follow @ http://www.rockcreeklake.com/fishing/flyfish.htm

Flies for Rock Creek & Vicinity
The dry flies you choose to use should not be larger than #14. Size 16 or 18 dries are usually the best size, but as usual, you should do your best to match the hatch, so ideal fly sizes will differ. Size 8 or 10 is good for streamers, such as olive matukas, Twin Lakes Specials, or wooly buggers.

The following flies are only a few of the ones that have worked well in the Rock Creek area in the past...
(color photos on website)
Olive Matuka
Wooly Bugger
Black Ant
Elk Hair Caddis
Light Cahill
Royal Coachman
Adams
Female Adams
Black Gnat
Mosquito
Beadhead Pheasant Tail
Prince Nymph

Where to Fly-Fish Rock Creek
I've split Rock Creek Canyon into 2 parts for presentation of this section. The first part discusses places to fish along the Creek from Mosquito Flat to Aspen Camp. This section also includes discussion of Rock Creek Lake. The second part focuses on the backcountry's lakes and streams.

To give you a better idea of how Rock Creek Canyon is laid out, here's a great TOPO MAP of the region.

1. Rock Creek & Rock Creek Lake
There are several sections on Rock Creek that are great for fly-fishing. Let's start from Mosquito Flat Trailhead and work our way down the canyon. At Mosquito Flat, there are several sections with an abundance of brook trout. Rainbows are also stocked there once a week. Less than 1/4 mile up the Little Lakes Valley trail from Mosquito Flat, there's a beautiful, wide, slow moving section of creek that's also "brookie-filled."

About 2 miles below Mosquito Flat is Rock Creek Lake. The creek entering the lake is fishable from the inlet of the lake to about 200 yards upstream, until the creek starts getting low later in the season. The lake itself is fishable by waders at the inlet and near the boat dock. Anglers can wade out quite a ways in these locations. Of course, a float tube would really make the lake accessible. As Rock Creek empties out of the lake, another wide, marshy, calm section of creek lies about 100 yards below the outlet of the lake, right across the street from Rock Creek Lakes Resort. Waders are mandatory to fish this section. Hundreds of brookies thrive in this section of the creek, while larger planted rainbows lurk in the marsh as well.
Fly-fishing at the lake's inlet
(Bernie Light)

Rock Creek below The Pond
(Tim Bradley) It is only another 1/2 mile down canyon where one of the best fly-fishing spots in the canyon can be found. The locals call this area "The Pond". The pond is really just a very wide section of the creek, but it's definitely large enough to be a named lake. Brook trout and decent sized browns are present in this section of the creek. As the creek narrows below the pond, it remains calm and meandering. Along with the pond, this is a very marshy section, requiring waders to be fishable. The creek remains in this calm, meandering state until just before Upper Pine Grove campground and the bridge to the lower corral. An easy way to fish this section is to park near the bridge just before the corral, and walk upstream on the west side of the creek. There's barbed wire and more willows and brush on the east side of the creek, making creek access more difficult compared to the creek's west bank.

Still further down canyon, East Fork is located about 3 miles below the pond. To fish East Fork, the best thing to do is to park in the East Fork public parking area, directly across the street from Palisade Campground, and walk upstream from there. Much of this section of the creek is very overgrown with willows, so waders are mandatory to get to the water. From the parking area to about 1/2 mile upstream, the creek meanders slowly. Brookies and rainbows are plentiful in this section.

Big Meadow, Iris Meadow, and Aspen campgrounds, are home to some great fly-fishing waters. Beaver dams are present downstream from Big Meadow, and upstream from Iris Meadow. Beautiful, calm waters are present in Iris Meadow and Aspen campgrounds. Anglers should be especially careful with their backcast in this area, as several trees and shrubs line the creek here.

2. The Rock Creek Backcountry

Rock Creek's backcountry is loaded with trout-filled lakes that are perfect for fly-fishing. Little Lakes Valley has the majority of the lakes. Brook trout are the most prevalent species in the backcountry, while brown, rainbow, and golden trout also populate the valley. Most of the lakes can be waded in, as most of them are relatively shallow, however, hauling wet waders around the backcountry can be a bit tiresome. I'd still recommend using waders, if you can figure out an efficient way of carrying them around. Waders aren't necessary in many locations, however. In the picture to the right, Marsh Lake is home to small brook and large brown trout. Many of the lakes are similar to Marsh Lake in that their shores are lined with reeds and marsh.
Marsh Lake
(Doyle Donehoo)

I've found that fishing the lakes' inlets and outlets is most productive. A size 16 or 18 dry fly such as a light cahill, mosquito, black ant, adams, or caddis, is the best to use. The following lakes will yield large amounts of small trout: Mack, Marsh, Heart, Box, Long, Chickenfoot, Gem, and Ruby. These same lakes also provide the occasional lunker. A 5 pound brown was caught out of Heart Lake in August, 1998, and Mack Lake produced a brown of the same size the previous year. In 1999, a 6 pound, 3 ounce brown was caught in Box Lake.

The streams that flow through the backcountry are, for the most part, narrow and marshy. Waders are necessary to fish the streams in most spots. Brook trout are thick in the streams, but fly-casting can be tricky due to the abundance of reeds, willow, and marsh in many stream sections.

I'm a used to be resident. Moved there in '79 when I graduated from HS in the Bay Area. Lived there until the early 90's. My folks just moved from Arcadia to Folsom 3 years ago. Still have lots of connection to the area with friends and stuff. My sister was an Apache, class of '83. My grandparents moved from SF to Arcadia in 1974 from The Bay Area, so I was coming down and spending summers before I moved here. It's great moving to a place where you already had friends.

Not sure how long you've lived in the "Community", but I used to work at a baby store that was right next to the old Hinshaw's Dept. Store.

I miss Anthony's Deli on Baldwin, El Loco on 1st Ave., Peppers up by Santa Anita, and of course Taco Treat down on Live Oak. My friends still own that.

Just about anything I really want to. I do roasts, stews, soups, chili, meatloaf, cornbread, fresh bread, fajitas, rice, taters of all sorts, coffee cake, cobblers, biscuits and a few dozen other things...I would like to do a meatloaf, chili, stew or roast, something we could sit around and have as a main course. Then others could bring side dishes around a campfire. I did an elk roast that Speck brought at the Slam which came out okay. If I had 3-4lbs of ground venison left, I would do up a meatloaf made on a bed of sliced potatoes and Texas sweet onions. The juice from the meat sautes the veggies.......mmmm good http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wow-eyes-yellow.gif
Since I will have coals going already, I usually have a small grill ready to do some side stuff, like hotdogs and tortillas for the kids, Italian Sausage or some brats.
Maybe some foil wrapped bananas http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana-man-yeah.gif and chocolate chips, apples, butter and cinnamon or even foil cobbler. (Too many years as a Scouter)

Which night works best for everyone? It doesn't get dark until late at that time of year up there...8:30-9pm... but I would be happy to get the oven going and the food whenever it works.

Which night works best for everyone? It doesn't get dark until late at that time of year up there...8:30-9pm... but I would be happy to get the oven going and the food whenever it works.
we could use some help in the cooking of the ribs she needs to bake them for about 2 hours, i also have a oven but do not think 1 is enough but 2 should beable to do 4 rack at the same time

I was class of '79, and a lot of my friends were class of '79 thru '81 at AHS. So, I am sure that we will have many mutual friends....and who knows....we may actually even know each other!!! There are many in Arcadia that swear I went to Arcadia HS. Pigig - @ Wallyworld, they have bags of mesquite BBQ chunks for a small fee. I use those mixed the old Kingsford. Also, take a bag or two of Jack Daniels barrel chips.

I found its best to do a LIGHT coat of oil, turn on the oven for a couple hours, and then let it cook in the oven. Some people I know will take a rag and wipe while in the oven. I also do the main oven upside down so the oil won't pool on the bottom. Don't forget the lids too.

Well, by the time of my post it will be obvious that I'm not making the 4am departure. I found out last night that my tent is still in my brother's garage (since March) and he can't find the tent with all the stuff crammed into his garage. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-crying-blue.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-crying-blue.gif So I'm going to break the rules and show up with a tent that I've never put together before.

On a GREAT note, a buddy called up and asked if I were still looking for a .243 for my daughter. Jump in the truck, pull a quick road trip up to Lake Arrowhead, and I'm now the proud owner of a Parker Hale Limited in .243W. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-dancin-red.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

Fishing was marginal - OK, a few did pretty well, but I suck.

Guys, sorry I took off early. It was my choice. Got a lot of work straightened up and was still able to take in three of my daughter's water polo games.

Fritz, Tim, Dave, Westy & friends, it was a pleasure to meet you and share a campfire (plus a few tasty burgers). http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-devil.gif

Xavier, it was good to rekindle our friendship even if I am an old man http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hair-raisin-blue.gif

Best part of the weekend (non- BS or fishing) -

- On the way up, the jet fighters were dualing over Pearsonville for over twenty minutes. A perfect excuse for a pee break.

- On the way back just past Big Pine where South Fish Springs Road hits the 395, there were between sixty & eighty Tule elk grazing about fifty yards off the freeway. I pulled over and started glassing with the Nikon Monarchs and soon enough I had about ten other vehicles stopped. Most were ignorant tourists, but with a quick lesson they were soon elk connosuiers. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

Hey Duke:

I was wondering where you went off too! Glad you got home safely!

It sure was nice meeting you and all the other JHO'ers. A special thanks to Cecil and Dee (Mr. & Mrs. Pigig) for their hospitality and good conversations, and for also for getting this trip together!! Good job you two!

Nice getting to finally meet Hronk, Westy, Fullsack and fpscabs! It's amazing that Fritz and I lived in the same neighborhood, and had so many mutual friends, yet didn't know each other! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

And Dave (Bighorn67)...as always, it's great to spend time with you! Hopefully you have a safe and prsperous trek across the country!

For those of you that left early, we had a bit of excitement! A bear came into camp and apparently thought he needed Westy's ice chest full of pork more than Westy did. The bear came up our way for dessert...he nailed the snicker bar that I forgot about in our drink cooler, and then nailed Pigig's camp for some fig newtons!

Dee took pics and said she'd post them this week.

I'm already for next year!

Well, finally home http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-crying-blue.gif Enjoyed the Sierras too much. Bighorn and I had some good fishing. Big thanks to Hronk for showing up and telling Dave about that yellow Sally fly. Around 7:30, the trout started to hit @ Hotcreek. We fished until flies weren't floating and the bushes won, but caught a bunch of little browns in that last hour and half. I might not mention the 'big one' http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif that rolled over the small rapids breaking off my second to last fly. The best part was being there and being the very last group of fishers to leave the water. We enjoyed the calm and peaceful time on the creek.

Dave thanks for the flies and the shuttle service to the Creek. Enjoy your summer and good luck on all your hunts in Utah and fishing in Colorado. More fishing reports in the Flyfishing forum.

Potluck on Sat was lots of fun http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif Everyone brought some tasty grub and the company was great. I hope they get the ****** http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shootin-green.gif that broke in to your truck.

Nice pics you guys! It's too bad that you didn't get a straight on shot of the camp host.....he's a dead ringer for mouthcallinmatt. In fact when I first saw him, I said "Matt what are you doing here" until I realized it wasn't him!

Can't wait until the next one!

Hey Pigig...he posts on the Waterfowl page and occasionally posts on Campfire. His grandfather, Max, runs the concession out at the Wister Wildlife Refuge.

Sorry, thought most folks knew who Matt is.

Take care and say hello to Little Woman for me!

Steve: You're right...the host did have hair! Matt's is so cropped you really have to look hard to see if he's actaully bald or not!!

Fritz, I was totally bummed I didn't make the trip. It's been a while since we have spoken. It sounds like you guys had a good time. And, I keep hearing about all this good food you keep cooking in the dutch oven. I really can't believe I missed that!

Little Woman, those are some very nice pics you took. Somehow you just happen to catch Pigig in the photo with the intensity as I remember.
