2004 FINAL OLYMPIC SHOTGUN TEAM TRIALS
3/26/04
FORT BENNING, Ga. – The competition started to heat up as the second day of men and women’s skeet came to an end Friday, at the Hook range on Fort Benning.
The Air Force’s Lt. Col. Bill Roy finally grabbed a lead over the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Sgt. 1st Class, Todd Graves. Roy, of Colorado Springs, Colo., hit 75 straight targets to get a one-point edge on Graves. The two had been tied throughout the entire competition until today. Another USAMU shooter, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dulohery also hit 75-straight and gained a couple of much needed points on the leader board. Dulohery, of Columbus, Ga., and Graves, of Cusseta, Ga., are now neck-and-neck going into the final day of matches.
Another pair that finished neck-and-neck are Randy Sotowa (Arcadia, Calif.) and Allen Treadwell (Seligman, Mo.). They are tied at fourth place with a total score of 429, five points from the position they would need to be in to make it to the Olympic Games. Only the top two men will be heading to Athens.
The competition is just as fierce on the women’s side as Haley Dunn (Eddyville, Iowa) and Connie Smotek (Lyons, Texas) battle it out for the top spot and a trip to this summer’s Olympics.
Smotek, a 1992 Olympian, started and ended strong, shooting a 25 in both her first and last rounds. But the 19-year-old Dunn remained consistent throughout and actually ended with the highest score of the day among the women’s competitors. Dunn goes into the final day, four targets out of the lead.
Brandie Neal (Spencer, Ind.) finished with a 90, which puts her 14 points behind the leader, while Leigh Ann Crozier (Pine Mountain, Ga.) continues to shoot well, just not well enough to make up the 18-point margin she now finds herself with after the second day of matches.
