DUNE ACRES, IND. -- State wildlife officials have revoked Dune Acres' permit to conduct deer culls after two hunters allegedly violated state hunting regulations by using spotlights to track down deer at night.
Since last November, when the permits were issued, authorized hunters had killed 30 deer and were permitted to kill five more before the violations occurred, said Sgt. Tim Theriac, a conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The agency recently sent a letter to Dune Acres Town Council President Ben Bolton informing him that the deer cull permit for the northwestern Indiana town was being revoked, Theriac said.
The permit was issued Nov. 1 and expires on March 31, Theriac said.
Dune Acres residents John D. Sullivan, 38, and Ray S. Tittle Jr., 73, had hunting permits to kill deer in the lakeshore community about 10 miles west of Michigan City.
The men were hunting at night, with the permit allowing hunting only from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, Theriac said. They also were using a spotlight, a violation of state law.
Both men face misdemeanor charges for those and other violations that allegedly occurred on March 4. They were reported to conservation officers after a woman said she saw the men using the spotlight, yelled at them and also recognized them, Theriac said.
He said Tittle told conservation officers he had been deer hunting during the day and thought he may have wounded a deer. He said he got Sullivan to go with him to look for the animal.
