O.K., I've finally decided to ask. What exactly is meant by a "buffered" load. An acquaintance recommended using buffered loads, especially when chukar hunting (long and often quick shots). Any idea why? TIA.

Vic,
Buffered loads have mica powder mixed in with the shot charge. I have only heard of pot shooters using buffering as part of the extremely heavy loads they often use. I believe it helps keep velocities up, the pattern tight and reduces shot deformation. Pot shooting is a sort of trap shooting for money. Last man standing (figuratively) wins. Guys use these loads in guns that can take a lot of punishment like the M-12 heavy duck. The shooter takes a bit of punishment as well - pot loads aren't pleasant to shoot.
Not sure why buffered loads would be needed for chukar. Magnum or heavy game loads with hard or plated shot and full chokes would get you about all you could use for long shots and up close, it wouldn't be pretty.

All of the Hevishot (tungsten/nickel) turkey loads are also buffered.

go to one of the ammo manuf's sites, remington in particular, it should have a note on their load. DK, summed it up, media mixed in with the shot charge!

Mica is not used for buffered loads, buffer is usully a fine ground up poly years ago fine corn meal was used, buffering a load will help with pattern and shot deformation in any load, but the hotter the more recoil and the chance of the pellets setting back and flatting or crunching each other that is the main reason for buffering.
To me it would be a waste of time and money to buffer chukar loads unless you are buying factory and they came that way.

Wanna see some? I'm sure there are a number of media that are suitable. That's just the one that I'm familiar with.

Mica is a super fine white powder same as graphite, it's used to lube case mouths on brass it's to expensive to use as a buffer one, and two I can't see how it would work do to being so fine it's was illeagle to sell mica in Ca. 3-4 years ago (I don't know about now)as drug dealers where using it to cut coke with.
Years ago I use to graphite my wads added some FPS to a load.
I don't know if you reload R&P if you do then you should know what mica is.

I do not reload R&P. I do reload shotshells and shoot quite a bit of trap and skeet.
I don't know if you have been in a pot shoot, but so, then you should know what mica is http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif

So what's your point? Maybe you are looking at some finer grade of mica for whatever R&P applications you use or maybe its cheaper in bulk.
