Just curious if people are planning on doing this again this spring. Last year we had about 6 of us that went out and it was a great time even though only two areas of FHL were open. I'd be up for it.

Later.....

You can count me in. I haven't hunted FHL for turkey before but I've been quail hunting down there for years. Would be nice to meet some of the JHO crew.

Now the tough question...opening weekend or after? (Assuming access to the base).

I am pretty new (well, OK, very new) to turkey hunting and to FHL (only been there once) in general so I can't really pick a date. Do we pick one based on the best hunting (breeding season) or based on the best time not to run into 200 hunters???? I dunno just thought I'd put up a post to see if there was interest. I'm not sure I can make the opener anyway since I will be hog hunting the week before. I'm sure as the season gets nearer there will be some chatter about setting up a trip, just wanted to plant the bug in peoples minds.

I've never hunted FHL for turkey but if it's like quail season I'd suggest we avoid the opening weekend. The quail opener can be a circus but productive. The thing we'll need to watch is what training areas are open and when. I'm game for any weekends after the opener. Are any of you bowhunter or have experience calling? Anyone every have success with turkey at FHL?

Does FHL only allow hunting on weekends?

BDB

I think so but I haven't spent much time hunting there.

Weekends and federal holidays only, although it was open for about 10 days straight during the Christmas/New Years time period. Additionaly it's an active military (national guard?) base so there are times when various training areas are closed for military use. Beautiful country. Can't wait to get back.

2nd weekend will work for me April 2-4.

Make sure to get your FHL permit application in. You can download the app at the link below. You can have them hold it at the check in window.

Opening weekend is bad for me so this works perfect.

I'm in for the weekend Jesse recommended. April 2-4.

Guess I'll send the app out to FHL in the next few days, didn't want to until I saw if there was any interest.

Hey Guys, count me in to. I been doing the Turkey thing as if its my full time job so I would love to hunt with you guys. The second weekend is good for me so let me know when and where to meet.

BDB

I'm sure as the time gets close (2 weeks away) and we know roughly who is coming that we'll start the planning of where to meet. Probably the same as last year though, most of us will camp at FHL and start showing up Friday around 2pm onward.

Don't forget to send in your app to FHL at least 2 weeks before the hunt and have them keep the pass at the registration desk for you. It's also a good idea to call them and verify they received it and there are no issues as it sucks to show up and be turned away. They are not the most accomodating folks at times !

I haven't sent mine in yet, I think I will get on that today.

Hey BDB,

Are you bringing your bow or shotgun? Same for the rest planning on going. I got one turkey with my shotgun and am interested in trying this year with my bow. I'm pretty much a turkey neophyte but I'm looking forward to this hunt.

Being a new turkey hunter and having never take one I'll be using the shotgun for this trip.

Also another note for anyone coming. The date is fast approaching and if you do not have a FHL yearly pass you will need a weekend pass. You have to apply for it time is running out for that. I mailed mine today. I also checked the box for them to keep it at the registration window for me and I will call and verify they have it in a week and a half or so.

I'd love to join you all if you'll have me. I don't have a shotgun here in CA, but I do archery. Lately the toms around Ft Ord have been hot on the box call, hopefully they still will be then. BTW I will be coming from Monterey-Salinas Area if anyone wants to car pool, probably late Fri evening or early Sat morning. PM me. I've had a weekend pass for FHL burning a hole in my pocket so now you got me all excited.

Stupid Question: If we fill the turkey tags, anyone in for pig? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif

cheers

BDB

LeeChul: Sure come on along, the more the merrier. I have 3 ppig tags left right now but I'm hoping to only have one after next weekend http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cross-fingers.gif I'll bring it along just in case. I'll pack some slugs and maybe even the bow, we'll see.

For me, first priority - turkey, second priority - pig

Just wondering where and when people are meeting up. I got my application mailed out so let me know on any new info on where every one is hunting.

BDB
03-22-2004, 03:24 PM
The check in window is open from 3-7 on Friday. Last year most of us tried to get there around 3 to make sure we got the training areas we wanted. Some didn't show until later though and registered in the AM for the area they wanted. My plan is to show about 2:30 if I can get there that quick http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cross-fingers.gif

We can meet by the check in area or in the camp ground if we exchange vehicle info.

What areas are good for turkey? Pig?

For my wife's birthday I bought her a plane ticket to go see her mom for a week (better than her coming here!) so I was supposed to take her to the airport the first Saturday in April, and that would have ruined my opportunity to meet you all. Anyways I found a friend to cover for me so I'll be coming down late Friday night, probably around 9:30 10 ish. I hope there will be a way to identify you all.?? Should I look for the beer cans or what?

BTW I'll be in a 98 Ram Quad Cab Green-not that you'll be able to see the color in the dark. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ugly-lol-bashing-sign.gif

I'll be in the dark green Toyota Tacoma with a JHP and a JHO stick in the back window of the cap. If last year is any indication, the folks that know the training areas where the turkeys are don't post them up here, lots of lurkers who don't post http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wnk-yellow.gif We tend to discuss it around the camp fire.

I understand about not posting areas, I'll be there. It will be good to put faces with names. Anybody else planning to stick a turkey with a bow? Is #70 too much? I think I may loose some of those $8 dollar arrows on this trip (remember I'm just a poor white boy, $8 bucks is a lot to me.) Oh well, Jim does like my buisiness, I'm sure he won't mind selling me some more.

BTW why isnt there any emoticons for archery?

Well boys looks like I out for this one, I'll just have to use my FHL pass another weekend. Something came up today that is forcing me to cancel the hunt. Have a blast and shoot a few birds. I look forward to meeting you guys at the next event. I normally don't bail on plans but I have to this time. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-bag-on-head.gif

LeeChul,

I shoot a bow. Not sure if I'll try at FHL on turkey but I will definately bring it. Still undecided if I want to fire a Beman ICS or a 12ga at the FHL birds.

Would it be a problem if we moved this hunt back to the 3rd week of the season. April 9-11? or 4rth weekend April 16-18?

LeeChul
03-23-2004, 09:46 PM
Can't make that date, Father in law will be here. Sorry.

Isn't that the 4th weekend of the season? Now you got me all confused, that IQ test really screwed me up.. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif

Lets see...

27/28
3/4
10/11
17/18

right?

The thrid weekend sounds better for me. I might have to work on the second weekend and I got lazy and hav'nt sent my application for me permit for FHL yet. Would it be too late to make the second weekend?

BDB
03-24-2004, 02:41 PM
Might not be too late but it sure would be close !

I may (slight chance) be able to make the 3rd weekend or 4th weekend of the season. It's doubtful since I was just away last weekend and won't be around next weekend either. 3 of 4 weekends away might get the little lady a tad irritable. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif Stanger things have happened though. I'll keep tabs on the thread.

I need to know quick.

LeeChul

I can do the 2-4 and the 16-18, but not in the middle. I am definitely going 2-4 and if others will be there I'll go the 16-18 also.

I'll be going the weekend of April 16-18 then.

THere is less hunters later in the season but it can be warmer too. I've worked birds the last weekend there with no one around, which is rare these days.

Are we still on? Looks like maybe rain. Heavy rain makes many of the areas unreachable by vehicle unless you chain up all 4 and have 4x4.

We'll see what the weather looks like Thursday for final decision.

Is anybody still up for the event? I'm thinking about heading to FHL this coming Saturday and would like to put some names to faces with JHOers.
