Fishermen Rescued From Ice Slab On Lake Erie
Evans, NY (AP) 01/22/04 -- Nine ice fishermen escaped injury after fishing on an ice slab that broke away from the shore of Lake Erie in western New York.
Erie County sheriff's deputies used a helicopter to pluck the men from the ice a couple of hundred yards off Sturgeon Point -- after being stranded for about an hour Wednesday. At the same time, the US Coast Guard was issuing a warning against venturing onto the lake.
The deputies also retrieved three all-terrain vehicles and two sleds.
Coast Guard officials say ice on area waterways is extremely unpredictable. They say ice should be at least two to four inches thick to support a person and five inches thick to support a snowmobile.
Some precautions for winter anglers include leaving plans with someone on shore, wearing a life jacket and layered clothing, carrying communication and orientation equipment, and taking along flares, rope, and ice picks.
