Here's the link to the site for the mallard/pintail mix that I shot at Merced yesterday. I am not the greatest photographer, and I hope you can see the mixed plumage. The head is a green/brown mix and almost has a hologram effect to it, i.e. one way it looks green and another way it looks brown. It also has some white in various parts of the head. You can see a faint white ring around the neck. The bill is mallard for sure, but is not all yellow.

The tail looks part mallard and pintail. Instead of the mallard tail feather though, it has two small pins starting out the back. Also, the upper chest and shoulder plumage screams pintail. This is one pretty mixed up bird. Not good looking, but definitely unique.

This bird was flying as a lone single....I wonder if that's because he wasn't accepted by pins or mallards?????

I guess I didn't do the hyperlink correctly. If you copy and paste the address above into your browser, it will take you there.

Wow! That is one funky lookin' bird. That's cool where the bill is usually blue on the pintail it's yellow on this duck. I see the pintail feathers too but how about that head? That looks like a mix of more that just two ducks. Don't ask me how but that is definitely different. Are you going to have it mounted?

Hey Matt:

Thanks! I hit it pretty good in a few places, so it's definitely not a mounter. It's funny that you mentioned that it looked like a mix of more than two ducks...because I thought the same thing. There's also a part of his plumage that looks like a pheasant too. Hmmmmm....makes you wonder whatin the heck's going on out there with these darned promiscuous birds. Where are their morals?????

That is definitely one mixed up bird! It does look like many different ducks are all thrown in the mix. It almost looks like it's mallard/pintail/gadwall/wigeon... what would you call something like that?? It's definitely predominantly mallrd, but it does look like it has some sprig, wigeon, and or gadwall. The one pic shows purple on the head... kind of like some mature adult drake Gaddies. It also has some white, like a wigeon.

Good observation Cali...My dad and I were thinking gaddie until the light got better and we could see the brown/green. The wardens at the check station thought more pintail/mallard too, but who knows! Very bizarre bird. This one is a lot different than the one they have mounted at Gray Lodge back in #14. It has a pintail head, but mallard tail, if I remember correctly.

Have a good end of season shoot everyone!

I tried to pull up this site from my office and it wouldn't let me do it. The network admin stated that it was a blocked site. So, if your company blocks access to certain sites, that could one of them. You'll have to try it from home.
