2004 Trout Stocking
West Virginia 's 2004 trout stocking season has begun, according to Mike Shingleton , Assistant Chief for Coldwater Fish Management. All bi-annual, weekly, and monthly waters stocked January through April, will receive one stocking in January. Stockings will be completed as early in the month as weather, road conditions and manpower allow.
There are two changes for the 2004 stocking season. Burches Run Lake in Marshall County will no longer be stocked with trout because the dam was determined to be unsafe. The lake's water level has been lowered and stocking and angler access are no longer available. Trout anglers are encouraged to fish Wheeling Creek or Dunkard Fork and Middle Wheeling Creek lakes.
Also, at the request of city officials, Hurricane Lake in Putnam County , will not be stocked this spring because of safety concerns. Highway construction through Hurricane has greatly restricted access to the lake. Hurricane Lake is usually stocked once in January and again in March. Stocking should resume in 2005.
Anglers fishing in January are generally most successful using salmon eggs, worms and powerbait. These baits should be fished near the bottom and with a very slow retrieve. Warm, dry clothing will make fishing more enjoyable and will reduce the danger of hypothermia. Because of possible icy conditions, anglers should exercise caution along the edges of streams and lakes.
For daily stocking information, anglers can call 558-3399 or visit the DNR Web site at www.wvdnr.gov . The 2004 Fishing Regulations brochure, now available at all DNR offices and license agents, has a listing of stocked waters and the frequency they are stocked.
