Took a pair of Blue Wings this weekend near Kesterson NWR, CA. I know these birds are not real common on the pacific flyway. Just wondering how many of you have taken blue wings in California and were? This is only the second time have been around to see this and I have seen maybe 4 on close zones.

I took a beautiful, fully mature drake bluewing teal 3 years ago at Kern NWR. It was the last day of the season and i needed one more bird to limit out. I saw the drake and hen buzz me and i took one shot while it was in front of me, then a second as it was going away, And a third as it was getting out of range. The whole time i was telling myself that it couldnt be what i thought it was. On the third shot it went down, my dog was coming back with the bird and i was on edge until i saw the birds head flopping with its cresent moon on its face. A truely great day that i will never forget. I got the bird mounted ofcourse. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana-man-yeah.gif

I saw maybe 3 or 4 shot this year at San Jacinto.
I was watching a hunting show on the outdoor network. I think they were hunting the south coast. All they were shooting were blue wing teal. They were complaining how they wished a green wing would come in just for something different.

I've only shot one a few seasons ago, mid-November east of Sac NWR on a club. Congrats, you don't hear of them being taken that often.

I shot one about 5 years ago at San Jacinto on the Jr. duck hunt. It was awesome, didn't mount it though.

I got 5 of them this year on the oping day at sacramento refuge. I have also shot a few and seen more of them since then. The green wings are what I havent seen in the numbers I usually do. Not saying I havent shot a few got a full limit one day and close to it on others. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif

Got one last year at Kesterson NWR. Unfortunately I was waiting for "big" birds and let a flock of teal pass by. As they zipped over I saw the distinctive cheek patch and reacted with a quick shot (at about 10 yards!!!). Broke both wings and a leg. I did not figure it was worth trying to mount.
I heard of an amazing thing over christmas. A guy at a club by Sac NWR showed a friend of mine a Blue Wing AND a blue phase snow goose. Got them both on December 21st morning hunt. I hope the guy played the lottery that night.

About 5-6 years ago, I used to have a blind in the grasslands that had quite the afternoon teal flight. Most all of them were cinns, with some bluewings mixed in. For a couple years, I shot quite a few of them - Sure was fun looking for that white patch on the head! Actually shot a pair this year as well, and had a hen cinnamon to compare the hen bluewing to. Once you get them side by side, you can see the differences, but without the other to compare to, it's tough.

Never shot one, but I saw one at Yolo, it was after the season was over. I think it was early March. I thought it was very odd to even see one, let alone see one in March.

Saw a drake turned in at Wister a few Saturdays ago from Y15 and then a hen the week after that. Raymond said it was the first drake this season. One of the wardens was there and said he checked some guys by the sea the week before and they had three Bluewings. Would sure like to get one of those as they are gorgeous little birds!

Lameduck shot one opening day at Wister this year to early for the white check patch, it was just starting.

I shot at least 15 during the early teal season in MO. 3 years ago, on opening day the flocks would be as large as 70 birds, what a rush when they came in over your head at 20 yards, you would shoot BW, GW & doves from the same blind. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banana-man-yeah.gif

Another Blue Wing sighting... I hunted Gray Lodge today, and as I was checking out, someone had shot a nice drake blue wing. His partner also had the biggest wood duck i have ever seen, it was almost as big as a mallard... this thing was a monster!

Well it seems there are a few Blue wings out there but few and far between. Keep the post coming on Blue Wings it is always interesting to see how many and from what locations these birds are showing themselves.

Has anyone ever seen the drake mallard/pintail mix that they have mounted at the little bird museum back in #14 at Gray Lodge? That's a trip!!!

I don't know what you'd call it....a malltail or a pinllard??????

I saw one checked in at LB last year really great looking bird the ranger said you see them from time to time. the guy that shot it said it was with a hen mallard.
It looked more like a mallard but with pintail color but no horns.

Hmmm....I wonder what they would say if you shot a mallard/pin mix during the pintail closure at the beginning of the season???? Ticket or no ticket? Food for thought....

That would be very intresting on regulatory stand point. I would like to see a picture of that bird, anyone go to Gray Lodge with a camera so they could post some pics? I am always looking for new info.

I was just up there last week and brought a buddy by that had never been back to the display. It tripped him out!

We keep our trailer at Gray Lodge, so I'll have my dad snap a quick pic to e-mail to me when he's up there. I'll post it when I get it.

I took one in San Jacinto last year. For some reason I painted a couple of decoys flat black and they were attracted to that. They sure are pretty birds but it tasted like shit, unless I didn't know how to cook it. I put it in the oven and it was no good.
