I have a project coming with some cub scouts and thought we could make some owl hooters. It is part of a Jakes Day for NWTF.
A friend said he made one years ago out of some plastic tubing. Anybody have plans?

I haven't seen any but someone should pop up soon and answer your question. I'd like to know how, too.
Welcome to Jesse's, RoyalWapiti. Look forward to seeing you around often. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wave-hello-yellow.gif

Someone out there has to have some plans for these calls. Anyone know what materials are used. Id like to make one myself, and I wondered if there is some type of reed or just the canister and tube ya blow into.

I found some, and we made 45 calls that day. Take some black ABS type pipe 1 1/2" about 6 inches long. Drill a 1" hole in the side toward the top. Take some 1/2" cpvc about 1 1/4" inches long. Grind off alittle. You have to experiemnt to find the right angle. Look at a HS Strut call to figure the angle.
Buy some "Test Caps" these are better known as inserts that residential plumbers glue into PVC drain lines after roughing in the plumbing of a house. These are not the PVC caps that you insert the pipe into. The test inserts or caps are a specialty thing. They cost about 20 cents each.
Glue the inserts in the pipe, glue the 1/2 inch piece on the edge of the 1 inch hole and place tape over it to hold until glue drys.
Then we had kids put them aside to let the pvc cement evaporate, also made for a quieter rest of the day.
The costs is about 50 cents per call, great activity for kids.

Thanks RW,
Im going to try this, just a couple questions though~When ya say glue the 1/2" pipe on the edge, (1) do you mean insert the 1/2" pipe till the pipe is even with the inside edge of the ABS? (2) And does the test cap just fit inside the bottom of the ABS, and at the top, or just one end? I've never used a owl call before, so I'm not sure.

It took me awhile playing around with it, but I got it figured out. Pretty cool! I covered it with camo tape.
Thanks RW!
