I hunted out at SJ with a buddy, and ended up with two teal. not much to be proud of, but with the clear, sunny sky weather, we couldnt ask for much more. i know we ended up better than alot of others out there.

Hunted Twitchell Island today for only one speck. Had a few groups work to within 80-100yds, but just couldn't get them to commit any farther. Needed more decoys with some kites and maybe a little farther away from the blind. Overall, looks like it was about a 1-2 bird average per blind out there. Not many geese feeding on the island today. I'm heading up to the club in the morning so hopefully I'll have a better report tomorrow....if I can stay awake!

Hntndux,
I was out there at Twitchell yesterday myself, with my two boys. Too bad we didn't get a chance to introduce ourselves. Which blind did you take? I was in 5A and we got our 3 alutes and I managed to scrape a spec at a good 80 yards (not that I normally scrape, but it was near the end of the day and I said, "what the hell. One shot"). Broke a wing and down it came, probably at 100 MPH by the time it hit. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif Happy New Year! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif

Brainlessfool, thanks for the report on Mendota. Might be heading up in a couple of weeks. Did it look like there were alot of new birds in the closed zone.

there were more birds in the closed zone than 4 weeks ago. but with the nice weather last wed. they did not do much flying around. hope it rains like h%$L so that they'll be flying this week end. I hope to try again. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif

I took blind 12. The birds were just not over there on Wednesday. What reservation were you? I was #6 and 5A was my other blind choice, glad you got into some birds! I took 12 because the DFG guy said on Tuesday they was about 25,000 birds behind blinds 11-13. I guess the geese had different plans...
Hntndux,
I had ressie #10. I was kinda surprised to see that 5A was still open because they had gotten 4 geese the shoot before. Looked like a bunch of skyscraping going on over on your side of the road. Every time I heard shots over there I couldnt believe how high the birds were. The birds were allowed to circle around pretty good on our side and two of our geese were taken 10 feet over the dekes. The third alute was taken at about 30 yards over the blind. Snows and specs stayed well up though. Everytime it looked like some specs would be looking to come down, someone over there in 9 or 10 would take a 90 yard shot.
The snows knew how high to be...

Great pics MQ! I think it was blind 10 or 11 also. We scraped at a couple early on and figured out it was too high and I now 11A scraped at a group, but that was it for our side. I did hear alot of shooting from the middle area... We didn't have any aluetes over around us. The specs loved my honker call right up to about 80yds...I need practice on calling geese on approach I guess.

Great pics! I am jealous of the hunt!
Hntndux, I was trying to use my spec call to imitate the aleutian call. I didn't think it sounded that great, but the alutes didn't seem to mind too much. The specs are pretty blind weary now. Too bad it wasn't foggy like last year....
