Howdy,
I read that you can get 5160 steel from a spring and axle shop but I don't know if there are any in my area. What kind of stores or shops would have 5160 steel? My dad works at a machine shop but they don't use steel with that high of a carbon content. I plan on making knives with it. I would prefer dont to have anything shipped because of the weight. Thanks,

Anza Knives make their high carbon steel knives from files. I don't know what kind of steel it is but they are sure good knives'

Val,
Try a gunk yard,
you can sometimes even get broken leaf springs free.
Worn-out files work.
Some machine hacksaw blades work [bi-metal blades won't].
I've seen some nice knives made out of farm drag teeth too.

We just made a propane forge furnace with my nephew.
Bought a "Harbor Freight" 110lb anvil [thank goodness for free shipping].

Ear plugs and/or ear muffs are a must.

Good Luck, http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/snowflakes_fallin_blackonwhite_ani.gif

Check with the purchasing person at your Dad's shop to see where they get their materials. It's probably not too far away due to the shipping expense that you mentioned. That shop may have what you're looking for or can get it for you.

Here in my area there is a company that sells metal in various recipes and shapes. I've purchased a couple steel plates for a swinging gong target from them. If I'm not picky about shape or composition, the metal is pretty cheap.
