Timer for Homebrews

I am working on my first Homebrew. . . I have most things worked out, but I am seeing a few posts about timers being added to the set-up Jesse has shown on the website. I am using a MS20 sensor and the Canon AF camera. What kinda timer should I use? ###Where do I get one, Do I need one? How do I rig it up? I am checking past threads about timers, but I am not getting many answers to these questions.

It's not mandantory for your camera to work.
Good tool for a baitpile. Not needed for a trail monitor.
