I brought this up in the Carrizo thread and there was some interest. I'll start it's own thread and see how much interest there is. How about either the weekend of the 7th or the 21st.

I definitely have an interest. I am not sure which weekend is better for me right now though. Probably the 7th but ??? I'll keep an eye on this thread and see if the wife gives a hoot which weekend I am gone or not.

Last time we ended up camping in the parking lot at Wister. Unless someone has a better spot let's just do that again. I'll probably roll in Friday afternoon. Alot of the guys have the old school green JHP stickers on their trucks so keep an eye out. I'll be in a white F250 extra cab with a black shell.

Haven't seen any of the Bishops around here in awhile....any of you planning on going? Jesse...how about you?

I saw many coyotes the last two weekend of duck season. I hunt a club right across the highway from wister. I heard coyotes every night I was out there this last fall. I will be in AZ hunting javelina. Otherwise I would join you guys and show you around. We had at least 5-10 coyotes running around each night. And saw fresh bobcat track multiple times this season. We had a member shoot a coyote from camp a month ago. I have walked out of my trailer only to have a coyote less than 10yds away before. Watch out for the dogs out there. there are a couple packs roaming around. They are pretty much wild and do what you think is best if come upon them. none have collars. They tore up our club multiple times. a pack of wild dogs is an uneasy feeling while out there alone at night. This is the first year we always had a gun close by.

All the DWU fields are open to the public. At first light you can set up on these. the ones along gilespie and english roads have coyotes around them. the coyotes seem to use the drainage canals as corridors. I have had many insances of coyotes walking along the Z drain. I saw two coyotes 3 weeks ago heading into wister along the Z drain from our property. To bad they were out of range of the 3.5" goose load I had in. I am pretty sure night hunting is legal out there. Setting up at night could produce good results. Just make sure you have guys watching in all directions. We have put in a call around the fire for fun before and in no time had coyotes less than 50yds from the fire even.

Good luck and report how it goes. Less coyotes out there will help with the pheasants, quail, rabbits, ducks and everything else. Now if there was a way to control the hawks. the pheasants DWU plants might actually survive till hunting season.

Although my buddy "Westy" gives me a hard time about this, IMO, Wild dogs are a MUCH bigger problem than Coyotes and they MUST ALL be dispatched. They’re excellent table fare for the wild (unlike Coyotes) and you help the environment by eliminating these pests… and it feels good to help the wild… even if “Westy” calls you a “Dog Killer”.

We were thinking of going to Carrizo but if there's going to be JHO'rs gathering around a campfire I wouldnt mind going....Directions? and is there a large area to hunt or it it limited and is the parking lot a big dirt area and do you need any type of permits...etc...thanks......

Marty

From La Verne, head east on the 210 to the 215 South. Turn east on the 10 and head out to Indio. Just past Indio, go south on the 86S Expressway. As you approach Mecca, you can see the large bio-fuel power plant. Turn left at the mega-AM/PM store onto 66th. Cross over to old-111 and head south to Wister.

The parking lot is dirt. Permits? I don't think so. Open, non-posted land and DWU fields are close by.

Josh Y.
02-08-2004, 09:38 PM
There are many open areas to hunt. the open land past the farm fields are open also. Just make sure you don't enter the military land. There are plenty of signs. Don't want your truck to used for target practice. But does make form some good shows. Especially at night with the tracers and explosions in the mountains

If you need anything Niland is only a couple miles away. Don's bar is a good spot for food and a cold beer. And for adventure, take a trip out to slab city and salvation mountain. I guess the heat makes people a little wacky out there.

This time of year is good for seeing other wildlife at wister too. You will easily see thousands of ducks and geese. there are even flamingos out there. Your chances of seeing coyotes is good.

Pitdog - thanks for the thoughts on the dogs. coyotes are scared of me and run off. The dogs don't and it is not a good feeling when there are 4-5 dogs around and your shotgun only holds three rounds.

There are no permits for camping at wister. Though officailly, there is a day fee unless you posess a federal duck stamp. I don't know of anyone that has ever been checked though. I do ask birdwatchers and haven't found one that paid he day use fee. The anti hunting ones I give a hard time too when they don't pay the fee. guess they don't know that duck hunters pay for the refuge land with the duck stamp program.

It was a 4 and a half hour drive down there from Whittier in all that rain/friday get a way traffic. To go 175 miles. Luckily the rain quit that night and was able to sleep with the circling bats and satelites in the bed of my truck. After a few morning stands with Grtwythunter, and Wildbirdhunter I drove down the coachella canal near English and you could hear the SAWs and .50 cal machine guns ripping up the Chocalate mountain range. I got up on a bluff and with my binos I could actually see them doing thier manuevers. That got a little spooky so I went further down and made some more stands. The only thing I called in was a family of atv riders.
Later that afternoon Wildbirdhunter,MarinePMI and I made 2 more stands with no luck. The last spot got a pack of coyotes riled up we could hear them yipping and howing about a half mile away. Good times anyways and the ride back was 65 and 70 all the way.

I got out Friday afternoon go one stand started them the rain started coming down after about 5min I packed it up and walked back to the truck to dry off. Headed back to the parking lot when GWH showed up. Then Brian about 10pm. Then next morning we drove out to the first stand. We setup I stared the cotton tail distress call on the new JS digital prymaster. After about the fourth call set about 8min in to the stand I scanned the brush line and see what looked to be and out of place stump some 75 yards out. I did a second look and it just had to round of and end so I pulled the rifle up to use the scope to see a little Bobcat looking dead at me. I was not in a good shot position brush in the way and need to turn to my right some so doing that slowly an in one motion I pulled the rifle back up turning at the same time clearing the brush putting the scope just blow the head at the top of the chest. I don’t even remember pull the hammer back on the Encore just putting the scope on target and pulling the trigger and the bark of the 50grain V-max coming out the 223 barrel and not seeing the cat any more. I got up unplugged the speaker and unloaded the round put fresh one in and started walking out to see if I hit anything. Brian came over about half way out and just as we hit the last little hill you could see the beautiful little female bobcat on the ground. I did not see any damage at first till I flipped her over them you could see the softball size exit wound from the 50grain V-max round just at the shoulder. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wow-eyes-yellow.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wow-eyes-yellow.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wow-eyes-yellow.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ren.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ren.gif http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ren.gif
