What's the biggest bore cartrige rifle you have?
Mine would be either a 577/450 Martini Henry
a 43 Spanish Remington Rollingblock
or a 45/70 Trapdoor or 86 Winchester

My big bore barely made the cut at 3/8". Its a M375 Marlin in 375 Winchester. So far all I've been able to do with it is choke on big game shots. I missed a pig and a D11 Muley but its dead on at the range. This spring I'll take it out shoot some water jugs at various ranges off hand.

JMabbott888,
I really don't have a problem with the recoil of the rifle its just that I got Hawg fever. It was the first shot I'd ever take at a pig and for that matter the first wild pig I'd seen up close. The Muley I can't explain that one he took a step down into a creek bottom as I shot and I shot right over its back. At the range I find that the 375 is more managable than my 30-06 with 165 grain reloads. You move more lead with the 375 but that 06 has more steam and seams to punish a little more. I want to get it out for some target practice in the field just to get the old confidence factor back up. half a dozen gallon jugs of water at spread out 30-150 yards ought to work. This rifle has given me a case of marlinitus though when $$$ is right I plan on adding a couple more levers to the safe.

My biggest is a .577 Snider Enfield, which actual fires a .585" diameter bullet. The cartridges look like a 20 ga shotgun shell with an inch of lead sticking out the end. Awful fun to shoot tho not alot of recoil. In the recoil dept, I'd have to say my Siamese Mauser 45-70 takes the cake. I can load it to ohmgawd leverls of recoil should I feel foolish enough to do so. Worse than my 375 H&H, I'm sure. ~AMMOe

.375H&H and .45-70. In the recoil department though, I had a 10ga Browning BPS that would level even the biggest of big bore shooters. I've shot .460 Weatherby rounds that didn't kick as bad as that 10ga. There's something about the equivalent of a 1100 grain bullet going down the barrel in the opposite direction.

I have a Nef single shot with a 45-70 barrel , That light rifle is will kick pretty good with a 45-70+p load . If black powder counts then we can include a 54 percussion.
I don't have any big bore rifles http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shakehead-blue.gif other than a .50 muzzleloader. As far as recoil goes, the only thing I have with a lot of punch is a 1300 Winchester Slug gun. It's not too bad with 2 3/4" slugs, but the 3" slugs will get your attention. I remember the first one I fired out of it, I had a chew of tobacco in my mouth and when I squeezed the trigger and that thing fired my hat spun around and I thought my right eye had bugged out and I had most of my chew on my shirt and down the side of my face. I've owned other slug guns, but there is something about that one. I guess I need to save some dough and buy a gun or two.

A new arrival: I lucked into a Sharps 1859 repro in 54 caliber. When loading sans paper cartridges -meaning I breech seat a bullet in the chamber then fill it with powder- it swallows about 120 grains-equivelent of Pyrodex RS. The bullet is pushing 500 grains. It stands me upright when I pull the trigger, that's for sure. That's waaaay too stiff a charge for that rifle. I think I'll toss a 60 grain measure's worth of cornmeal in ahead of the powder next time out. ~AMMOe

This started out as, "What's the biggest bore rifle you have?" and I saw it go to where my mind sometimes goes when talking big bullets and big powder. WHAT KICKS THE SNOT OUT OF YOU! I love finding familiar spirits.
My biggest bore is only .284 but there are 4 of them and the littlest one kicks the hardest. My Weatherby Vanguard in 7mm Rem. Mag is the smoothest shooting rifle (and I'm talking from the bench where you REALLY feel recoil while working-up loads after 40 rounds) in my safe. It weighs 8-1/2 lbs. and gives a long gentle push. I have a Rem. Model 7 SS 7mm-08 that weighs in at around 6-1/2 lbs. that I just don't like to shoot off the bench, period! That gun reminds me of playing low-post against a skinny guy with his elbows in you all day long. Pokes you hard everywhere! I agree with the slug-gun posts. Just a 12ga. 1oz. 3" mag. slug will set you back a bit.
Question: Does recoil bother you guys as much as muzzle-blast. Personally, recoil doesn't bother me but too much if it's long like a heavy magnum with slow-burning powder but, I absolutely cringe and have to clear my head when a guy next to me on the range lets go on a .338 with a muzzle-brake. OUCH!!! Makes my chronograph blank-out (no joke)

All I have in rifles are just pea-shooters, My SKS is the bigest I guess.
Have a 54 cal Hawkins BP that I love to shoot. and speaking of BP, I sure have fun with a pistol I made years ago. I have a 69 cal "horse pistol" that is great.

I have a repro Billy Dixon Sharps chambered in 45-70 that shoots two in groups at 100 yards. Recoil is mild and is a pleasure to shoot.
Last year I added an 1895 winchester high grade to my arsenal chambered for the .405 and it beats the snot out of me. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ouch indeed! You know? My wife thinks I have a twisted sense of logic when it comes to firearms. I have in my custody a bullet mold for a 600 N.E. that sent me on a 3 month goosechase looking for barrels, reamers, and a suitable action with which to assemble a 600 N.E rifle. After concluding that my $50 bullet mold purchase would lead me to a several grand in cost I abandoned the project. Instead, I let a $7 purchase of a bullet used mold for the 577 Snider Enfield (Ideal #585-213) coax me into a $750 expenditure in a rifle, dies, and brass. Thank goodness Common Sense prevailed in the end. ~AMMOe

I have a Remington #1 1/2 with a Sharon 58 cal barrel on it. A 45 barrel fits it too. Breach plug is drilled and tapped for a #10 Cap. I shoot a 705gr hollow base slug in it. Have shot from 65 to 110 gr black powder. Recoil wakes you up after 90 gr powder. It isn't near as bad as a 500 gr full load in my CZ 458 Win Mag. Good shootin Packy

I traded the CZ off for a 35 Whelen. Now I have to get out and shoot it. I still have three 45/70s. One rolling block, a 95SS, and a Contender 15" barrel. I have shot white tail, and coyotes with it . (CZ) The deer was shot with a 350 gr X and dogs with three .458 RBs in line with no wad. Found out you must put a dab of lube on the end of the last round ball. You can only shoot about three shots before cleaning the lead out. I had a plan for using wheel weights for RBs. Must try that again some day. Wanted to get some pigs with the 350 Gr X but never saw one when carrying the .458. Good shootin' boys and girls. Packy

Never had the chance to hunt with it. Deer season here is shotgun/handgun/muzzleloader only. Have used it to thin out the wild dogs on my father-on-law's place. Goes right through them. My dream is to hunt Cape Buffalo someday, but with three daughters, a wife and now a grandaughter that remains a dream. I reload and shoot it often, fired about 35 rounds today at various targets.
Well I currently shoot a 450 Watts but I designed a new wildcat and am building one. THE 550 MAGNUM

I have two rifles that make the "cut."
First is a lever action Winchester BigBore94, caliber .375 Winchester. A fun rifle and more versatile than I ever imagined, I learned last year it will also shoot .38-55 Winchester ammo, and it does so quite nicely. Not as powerful as the .375 so it is more fun (i.e. shoulder-friendly) for plinking.
Second is a lever action Winchester "Trapper" in .45 Long Colt, it is my primary pig hunting rifle. I use a +P load.
Cheers,

I am new to this section but I decided to drop in. I bought my 6th lever gun today. It is a Marlin .444 trapper gun. It is a fine piece of work. I will put with my others which are henry golden boy .22, Rossi .45 colt, and my fav's the marlins in 30-30, .357, 35 rem., and .45-70. I guess the sad thing to say is I only hunted with the .30-.30 when I was little. The .357 and 45 colt are used for cowboy action shooting, and the rest are just for fun.
I am probably try to swap out the Rossi for a MArlin in the same caliber if I can find one cheap. After that I do not know what iwill start looking for. Possibly a .44 mag.

I have a Marlin 45-70 lever action rifle loaded with Garrett + ammo. No fun to shoot from the bench even with Past recoil pad, but OK when banging at big game. Have a .338 mag. also with a boss/muzzle brake. This one is a joy to shoot all day long at the bench. Hope to bag a hog with the Marlin this summer in Texas.

As far as bore goes, I guess my biggest are a Win94 Big Bore (.375 Win), and a couple of .50 BP's. As far as recoil, I'd have to give it to my namesake rifle hands down. I built a .338-06 from a Belgian FN Mauser some years ago as a work/hunting rifle (i.e. not a show rifle). My Dad heard it 'pop' that first time and said it blew fire 4 feet out the barrel in broad daylight. He called it BelchFire, and it's been that ever since. The loads aren't off the scale at all, just stiff. That rascal will kick your ancestors! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif
Maybe we need to start a thread regarding recoil as opposed to bore size?

I've got a Ruger 77 .458 Win Mag. I used to be a pilot in Alaska and Yukon and carried it with me everywhere I went, mainly on Kodiak. Lots of bears there and I used it several times to change their minds when they got too close. With the 500 grain slugs with max powder, it's terrible to shoot, really pounding your shoulder and making you reach for the aspirin when you get home. What I did to make it far more tolerable is handload with Barnes X bullets in 300 grain, again using max powder loads. The decrease in bullet weight has a dramatic downward impact upon recoil. I also put a pound of lead shot in the stock and added a Decelerator recoil pad. Now it feels as comfortable to shoot as my .300 Win Mag. I also have a 45/70 Marlin 1895. It's not too bad, even with max loads.

Used to have a .358 JDJ "hand cannon" T/C Contender with a 16.5" barrel so it could be either a rifle or pistol depending on my whim at the time. Also used to have a .338 win mag, but traded it for a .375 H&H. Almost forget my Marlin .44 mag because it barely recoils, but my "biggest bore" gun is my .729" (12 guage) Rem 870!
Sorry, but I can't top any of you....yet. Do my hope-to-have-someday's count? I'd like to get a 10 guage double barrel, a 45-70 American Derringer (both barrels), and either a .577 or .600 Nitro express someday- but I don't really NEED them.

Hi all,
I am new to JHO, and thoroughly enjoy the forum. My largest bore is a 10 bore double. However I believe the the recoil from a 5.5lb Darne 16 gauge shotgun was by far the hardest. I load for and shoot numerous rifles and shotguns and I still remember shooting the Darne back in the 60's. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-cool-shades-down.gif Take care and God bless

Hi all,
This is just an update on my previous post. I recently purchased a Belgian Browning Safari in .458 and although not my largest bore certainly is the hardest kicking rifle I have ever fired. When I received it all I had on hand were some 510gn solids, I placed a target at 60yds, took aim, snugged it up and pulled the trigger, Holy Jumpin @#$#@% http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hair-raisin-blue.gif My right middle finger went numb and I had an awful pain on the opposite side of my neck. I weighed the rifle with my digital fish scale and it weighed in at 7lbs 3oz. I have since found out that this was a common problem with the early Brownings and that recoil reducers and extra weight were the only cure. I have posted this story on other sites but thought I would offer a little humor (at my expense http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hidin-curtain.gif ) on this one also. Take care and God bless.

I only have a Marlin 45-70 rifle & the muzzle flip is horrendous with 420 gr. +P loads. The forearm jumps out of my hand at the bench no matter how tight I hold it. I just bought a slip-on Sims recoil pad & I have yet to try it. If it does not cure the horrendous muzzle flip, the next step I am going is porting the muzzle. My hunting buddy with a Marlin 45-70 ported Guide Gun has a very tame muzzle flip even off the bench. I wonder why anybody with a .45 cal. hi-powered rifle(elephant gun really) does not consider porting the muzzle or muzzle brakes. I have a .338 win. mag. BAR w/BOSS muzzle brake & the recoil is like a 30-30 & it is not that loud either w/PMC BarnesX .225 gr. ammo. I find that recoil management is a big factor in enjoying our BEASTLY toys. 'Nuff said. This is my big rifle for now, it is a 450 # 2 I am building. I am thinking of using the Claro blank in the picture for the stock, what do you guys think? The rifle is almost ready for proof testing, if it passes, I then have to regulate the rifle, install the ribs and front sight. After that comes the stock work and finally a rust blue job. If you would like I will keep you informed as work progresses.

What kind of action is that?
What kind of barrels?
larrysogla

At 12.5 lbs. the heavy rifle weight will absorb a lot of the bonecrushing recoil. Because of the heavy rifle weight, the rifle will recoil with a bonejarring jolt but it will not disassemble you. You will still be in one piece & still able to move your arms & legs after the heavy recoil. However, with that heavy of a rifle weight, the handiness & swift swing-ability of the weapon is slowed down. You need a gun bearer or a shooting stick. 'Nuff said. God Bless. larrysogla.

I proof tested my 450 #2 a week ago with a load thet figures out 18 grains over max and all went well!!!!!!!! Now I have to make the stock which is of Black Thorn, an African wood then I have to regulate the critter. I will post some pictures of the proof testing and the stock blank and stock as work goes on. I do not have a digital camera it may be a few days before I get the film back.
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner! The .450 #2 is a Jefferies cartridge and not a wildcat. The action I am using for the rifle is a French action (Fusal Robus) It is a double under lug action and has a hidden fastener and plenty of strength for this chambering which is very low pressure. The 450#s NE has a max pressure of around 26,000 CUP which is not all that much over hot shotgun loads.

Just an FYI: I located a Siamese Mauser '98 in 45-70 yesterday. It's at the Sage Brush gun shop in Billings, MT. The guy wants $575 for it. It has a Douglas barrel, Lyman Reciever sight/ fiber optic front sight, and is drilled and tapped for a scope. It's a nice looking gun. I already have a Siamese or I'd pounce on it. ~AMMOe

My biggest bore is a Ruger in .416 Rigby. As I have not had a chance to take it to Africa and use it the way it was intended, I decided to try it on the local white tail deer this year. No tracking required on this buck.

Navy Hunter,
I am curious which bullet you used and what the wound channel looked like, and if there was a lot of meat damage - do you have pictures?
I will be doing most of my rifle hunting next season with a 9.3mm and I believe that with the right bullet, even heavy-caliber rifles will do a nice job, without spoiling the game.
Congrats with the nice buck btw.

Sjuels,
I used the Federal factory loads with Woodleigh Weldcores (400 or 410 grains I can't remember which at ~2400 fps). The buck was quartering toward me at about 40 yds when I shot him. I pulled the shot a little and it hit him in the neck rather than the shoulder facing me. The shot broke his neck, pulverized a lung, topped the heart and exited through the off shoulder. Entry and exit wounds are below. As you can see there was not a lot of meat damage. Very little bloodshotting was there. I shot a medium sized doe with my Savage M99 in .300 Savage (150 grain Rem Core-lokt at ~2700 fps). The shot was a similar quartering toward shot at 50 yds. I didn't mess this shot up and the entry was through the shoulder and exited through the ribs. Two lungs and the heart blown up. I don't have pictures, but the entry and exit wounds showed significantly worse meat damage. I basically lost the shoulder.
From what I've seen on these two deer, it is pretty clear that the slower, bigger bullets definitely do the the job without damaging much meat. Even the relatively pedestrian 300 Savage ruined its fair share or meat. The core-lokt is a fairly frangible bullet and it definitely started expanding right at the point of impact. On deer sized game, the Weldcore didn't expand much at all from the looks of the exit wound.
I'm sure I'll use my .416 in the future for deer. It was a lot of fun, defininitely different than the standard ole .30-06. Which 9.3 are you going to use - 9.3x64, 72 or 74?

Navy Hunter,
I got a dainty little 9.3 x 62, which I will load up with barnes TSX's in 286gr, it's a full-stock CZ:

My wife gave me "African Rifles and Cartridges" by John Taylor for Christmas, and going through it I am convinced that a 416 or 458 Lott would be an excellent deer gun.
Friends and family believe that I have lost it, and it is therefore very encouraging to see good people who enjoy 'enough gun'.
John Taylor was of the opinion that high-velocity did not buy you much above 2700ft/sec and I have been surprised of how much meat damage light and fast bullets can do.
Since my reference for heavy recoil is the 50 BMG, the thought of a genuine african caliber is very compelling.
Good pictures of the wound channel - thanks for posting them.

Sjuels,
I guess you better get yourself a 416 or 458 Lott. You certainly don't want to be undergunned with that little 9.3, especially on those giant California deer. Have you taken your CZ out for hogs yet? That's the one hunting opportunity I miss since moving to Nebraka from California. Have fun next season.

Good shootin Packy[/b]
Packrat, isn't the Rem. 1 1/2 a Rolling Block? If not what is it? I have a Rem. 1 1/2 Rolling Block in the .43 cal Egyption, yhats about 11.4MM. It was originally made for Turkey but when a sales bane was placed on them, the order was changed To Egypt.
