Cell Phone Number Portability
CONSUMER NEWS — There is good news for cell phone users. If you own a cell phone starting one month from today, you will be able to keep our own cell phone number if you decide to switch companies.
This new law -- known as "number protability" -- has been years in the making and it is designed to benefit consumers.
And surprisingly, most cell phone companies are all for it.
However, there are some downsides. If you switch carriers, your number will be inactive for three to five days.
And you can't take your old phone with you; you will have to get a new one.
