View Full Version : Beagle back tracking
I have a 1 year old beagle. I took him out last season and he didn't do much. By spring he was trailiing and barking. I notice he back tracks http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ren.gif and doesn't stay where it's hot. Anyone have any experience with this? Anything I can or will he learn with time.
Thanks

So, your dog made a lose and ran the track back to the beginning or at least a point where he started. That doesn't seem too unusual for a 1 year old. The most important thing to do is keep him/her running.
I like to keep a hide handy and "toy" with the dog. Keep hem interested esspecially in the off season. You know, like - tye a string to it and drag it around your yard for instance. Also, Bill Boatman is a catalog that sells "rabbit scents" that are supposed to simulate the real thing- although I have never tried them so, I don't know how well they work.
Basically, the more work and training a dog gets the better he will "circle" around the point he makes a lose- the training allows them to recognize their scent on a previously run track and leave it to find where the rabbit went - and where they haven't :)
