You need to eat something before leaving the house, or heading out into the field. When your body has been deprived of food for 8 or more hours, it's a good idea to eat something. But not just anything.

Breakfast not only starts your day off right, and sets your body up for the coming day. Eating breakfast prevents overeating, or sugar snacking, before lunch.

Breakfast is especially important to children and adolescents. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast are more likely to have better concentration, problem-solving skills, eye-hand coordination, and be more alert.

A good breakfast contains carbohydrates, protein and a small amount of fat. With this combination, your body delays symptoms of hunger for hours. Smart choices for breakfast include whole grains, fruit and low-fat dairy products. When choosing a cereal, look for whole grains and make sure sugar doesn't appear as one of the first three ingredients.

If you dislike traditional breakfast food, try something different like leftover vegetable pizza, or a deli sandwich.

If you are in a hurry to get into the field, figure out what you'll eat the night before and get up 10 minutes earlier to enjoy it. Or, have a light snack and pack something to take with you. Sugars (donuts, poptarts...) will give you quick energy, but not last the morning. Snack on a bagel or apple on the way. Eggs, beans, bacon, sausage, burn longer and are heavier in your stomach. This can slow your activity down. On the other hand, not eating anything will leave you hungry by lunchtime, which will distract you from the hunt.

Be careful which drink you have with breakfast. Always drink water (hydrate) before going outdoors. Start a day or two before, and carry more water to drink in the field. A glass of milk with breakfast is always good. Orange juice has a high amount of sugar, but no caffeine. However, orange drinks can have caffeine, so read the label. Caffeine jitters can make you miss an easy shot.
