Cool gear
Short and sweet, the Swifty is one of the more popular recreational kayaks on the market. It is stable and easy to paddle, an easy-access boat. Anyone can get into it and have fun on ponds, lakes or mild rivers. It features molded flotation, and the hull has dual tracking channels. It is a good craft in which to learn and enjoy the kayaking experience. It retails for $369.99 at Valley Popular Outdoor Outfitters.
Catch of the week
Maury and Cody Foye of Flagstaff didn't use a fishing rod to catch a huge striped bass July 5 at Lake Powell. They just happened to be cruising around in their boat when they spotted it floating on the surface.
In what might have qualified as a state record, the Foyes pulled a dead striper out of the water in the San Juan area that measured 62 1/2 inches long and had a 37-inch girth. They estimated the fish weighed between 70 and 80 pounds after it broke their 50-pound scale.
If this sounds like a fish story, the Foyes have the photos to prove it, which they e-mailed to Lake Powell expert Wayne Gustaveson. By the way, the state record (Colorado River waters) is a 67-pound, 1-ouncer that measured 47 1/2 inches long. It was caught in August 1997 at Willow Beach.
