Customers to Pay for Wireless Number Portability
Consumers might not be so happy to change their numbers when cell phone carriers start adding charges to their bills.
Sprint PCS will be charging its customers 40 cents for E-911 and $1.10 for number portability and pooling.
AT&T Wireless is charging $1.75 per month
Nextel is charging $1.55 per month
Verizon has said it will not charge customers
Verizon Wireless originally opposed the filing but reversed its stance as it has the most to gain as the number one carrier. The company said it will not charge customers at first. Carriers opposed the requirements because the increased churn, which is already alarmingly high, would really hurt their profits. AT&T Wireless said the requirement will cost $42 million to implement and $50 million per year after to operate.
