Help count turkeys
Hunters, birders, landowners and other turkey enthusiasts will have an opportunity to help MassWildlife count turkey flocks this summer. The wild turkey brood survey is conducted each year from June through August.

Jim Cardoza, turkey project leader for MassWildlife explained, "The brood survey serves as a long-term index on reproduction. It helps us determine the overall productivity and allows us to compare rates of reproduction over a long period of time."

A turkey brood survey form to be downloaded has been posted on the Wildlife area of MassWildlife's website. Information to fill in includes date, town, number of hens seen and number of poults (young turkeys) and their relative size compared to the hens. Multiple sightings of the same brood should also be noted. Cardoza noted that citizen involvement in the survey is a cost-effective means of gathering useful data.
