Youth deer permit deadline extended to July 9
LITTLE ROCK - Individuals who would like to teach youths the sport of hunting will have their opportunity under a change in the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s special Wildlife Management Area deer permit and zone doe quota permit regulations.
Commissioners from the AGFC made the change last week to give youths more hunting opportunities in the state. The change extends the deadline to apply for permits to Wednesday, July 9. The previous deadline was June 30.
The change will only allow youths under 16, which do not have a hunter education card, the opportunity to apply for one of the permits. Before the change, hunters under the age of 16 applying for one of the permits had to be hunter education graduates.
Permit applications may be picked up at Arkansas Game and Fish Commission offices, license dealers around the state or by applying online at www.agfc.com. Youths without hunter education cards must use their social security numbers in place of their hunter education numbers to apply for the permits.
There are certain guidelines to follow during the extended application period. Youths will get preference for the zone doe quota permits. Youths with hunter education cards will get preference over those who have not completed the course. For those hunters who have not completed the hunter education course, the AGFC strongly encourages them to do so before hunting season begins.
Those hunters without the cards must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at least 21 years old before hunting season. All other current hunting regulations apply for these special hunts.
The AGFC is only opening up this process to accommodate youths who have not taken hunter education, but whose parents want to take them hunting.
The permit schedule this year will now be: deadline for applications, July 9; first drawing and notifications mailed, late July; $10 permit fee due, early August; second drawing and notifications mailed, late August. All permits will be mailed in late September. For more information on the permit system, phone (501) 223-6440 or (501) 223-6359.
