Wayward Moose beds down near clinic
Billings Gazette Staff
Billings Police had a "wild" call late Monday night when they located and attempted to help apprehend a moose in downtown Billings. Callers to 911 reporting seeing the large cow started after 11 p.m.
There was some confusion when police thought witnesses may have confused the ungulate with a man riding a horse bareback near the Empire Bar. But police located the moose on the south side of Deaconess Billings Clinic.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks Game Warden Bryan Golie responded and, at press time, was waiting for direction from a specialist on tranquilizing the moose.
Police closed Ninth Avenue North between North 28th Street and North 27th Street. While the moose bedded down in trees near the main south entrance to Deaconess.
Mark Huestis, of Great Falls, was entering Billings when the moose crossed the street in front of him. "It's kind of weird. I was beginning to think that Billings has domesticated moose in town," he said.
Police directed pedestrians away from the area and worked with hospital security to keep people from using doors near the moose.
