Search for tent-busting grizzly halted
Billings Gazette Wyoming Bureau
There have been no signs of a tent-hopping grizzly bear in Yellowstone National Park for about a week, so park rangers have called off attempts to capture it.
Meanwhile, park officials have reopened Pebble Creek campground, where a grizzly smashed an empty tent more than a week ago, but only those sleeping in hard-sided vehicles are being allowed to stay there.
"We'll keep a really close eye on things and see how it goes," said Marsha Karle, a park spokeswoman.
Shortly after the first incident, rangers closed the campground and set up a trap for the bear, but the bear never took the bait.
Rangers are also monitoring a backcountry campsite where a bear apparently bounced on an unoccupied tent near Grebe Lake last week.
A decoy tent was set up after the campground was closed, but the tent apparently hasn't been knocked down since, according to park officials.
Elsewhere in the park, officials reopened West Thumb Geyser Basin after a grizzly bit a woman on the boardwalk there last Monday. The bites did not break the woman's skin.
But the geyser basin was closed again Monday after reports that an elk with young calves had charged some visitors. No one was injured. Karle said the basin will reopen in the next day or so.
