Mule deer banquet set
By The Farmington Daily Times
FARMINGTON The local chapter of the Mule Deer Foundation will be looking to continue the success started last year at its big-game banquet.
The San Juan Chapter of the MDF, launched its first banquet last year to huge acclaim. The banquet was the best new club banquet in the country based on net proceeds.
This year, the group hopes to do just as well, if not better. This year's event will be June 6 at the Farmington Civic Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m.
The Mule Deer Foundation puts on a banquet not unlike the others in the area, and it's also raising money for wildlife habitat.
From last year's banquet, the MDF has put $7,500 into on-the-ground projects in the local area.
First the group spent $5,000 to facilitate a land swap to procure winter habitat for deer, and then followed that up with a $2,500 solar-powered water well in Largo Canyon.
This year's banquet offers plenty of rifles, muzzle-loaders and archery gear, along with a cow elk hunt on the Jicarilla Apache reservation and a guided mule deer hunt in Unit 2.
There will also be 24 art prints from some of the top wildlife artists working including Hayden Lambson, J.T. Myers and Christopher Walden.
Also featured with be La Plata artist Jim Tschetter, a celebrated wildlife artist, who has offered the group a print titled, "Legacy," which was the 2001 National Arts in the Park grand prize winner and a crowd favorite everywhere it's seen.
Tickets for the event cost $50 per person, or $75 for a couple.
With that comes a membership in the Mule Deer Foundation.
A sponsor package will run $300, which includes a membership, two dinner tickets, an embroidered duffel bag, and a one in five chance at a $250 gift certificate from Cabela's.
Rocky Mountain Rib is catering the affair.
Tickets are only available from MDF members.
Information and tickets: Vernon Waldron, (505) 598-5582; Victor McDaniel, (505) 632-9408; or Joe Early (505) 326-5776.
