FREE FISHING

You won't have to worry about getting nabbed by the warden this weekend if you're fishing without a license in Missouri or Kansas.

Saturday and Sunday have been designated as Free Fishing Days in both states, meaning you don't need a state fishing license.

It's an annual event that coincides with National Fishing and Boating Week, a program designed to recruit new participants to the water sports.

By giving fishermen a "free pass" for the weekend, state fisheries departments hope to encourage some residents and visitors to give fishing a try for the first time.

In both states, other regulations, such as daily size and creel limits, will remain in effect. And in some cases, city or county fishing permits may still be required.

Check before you make that first cast.

KIDS FISHING

Kids will get a chance to learn about fishing from the experts Saturday at the Wal-Mart store on Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee.

In conjunction with National Fishing Week, Wal-Mart will put on a "Take a Kid Fishing" program.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the store parking lot, tournament fisherman Joel Hartman and others will give fishing tips and run casting contests, scavenger hunts and reeling races. Kids also will receive giveaways.

Children ages 3 to 14, accompanied by an adult, are eligible. The program is free of charge.

GOVERNOR'S CLASSIC

The fish at Coffey County Lake will get celebrity treatment Friday.

The occasion? The annual Governor's Fishing Classic, a fund-raiser for the Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs Foundation.

In the event, fishermen are paired with celebrities and guides and compete as teams in a tournament.

In the past, members of the Chiefs and Royals and the Kansas State and KU football teams, as well as pro fishermen, have competed.

One of the best-known fishermen in this year's event will be K-State running back Darren Sproles. Pro fishermen such as Cecil Kingsley also will be in the field.

The event will start today with a golf tournament, for which the host will be Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

The fishing will take place from 5:30 a.m. to about 11:30 a.m. Friday. Sebelius' husband, Gary, will be the featured host of that event. (Other obligations will keep the governor from attending.)

Members of the K-State and the KU women's basketball team will be attending the luncheon and will help with the kids fishing clinic in the afternoon.

The event is organized by the Kansas Wildscape Foundation, a non-profit organization that funds outdoors projects throughout the state.
