Mountain lion at Big Bend Nation Park killed
Associated Press
BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK -- A mountain lion believed to be responsible for attacking a hiker earlier this week at Big Bend National Park has been "humanely killed," park officials said.
The mountain lion appeared old, emaciated and in extremely poor condition, park spokesman David Elkowitz said.
A necropsy will be done, San Antonio television station WOAI reported.
The 30-year-old hiker was attacked Tuesday and was clawed and bitten. He was treated by park personnel and then drove himself out of the park. His name was not released.
The park closed some trails in the Chisos Mountains shortly after Tuesday's attack.
All trails were opened Thursday, but with some restrictions. For now, Big Bend is not allowing solo hikers or hikers under 12 on five trials in the High Chisos Mountains. Three campsites -- Juniper Flats, Boulder Meadows and Pinnacle -- are temporarily closed.
