ROCHESTER, Minn. -- A Canada goose knocked out power to 1,153 homes in Rochester and temporarily darkened Easter services at Bethel Lutheran Church.

According to Rochester Public Utilities, the goose flew into a power line, causing three lines to fail. The goose did not survive, said Julie Moenck, RPU spokeswoman.

The outage lasted about an hour. No major commercial customers were affected, but Bethel Lutheran Church went dark.

Three people were trapped in an elevator at the church but emerged unharmed. The outage happened on the church's most heavily attended Sunday of the year, said the Rev. Norman Wahl.

About 800 worshippers packed the sanctuary, spending the first 45 minutes of the hourlong service in candlelight.
