Grant Provides Funding for Boat Launch Restroom

SPRAY – The City of Spray has been awarded a $14,500 grant from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program to construct a restroom facility at a boat launch along the John Day River.

This grant is part of a larger project by the city to purchase a five-acre site now in private ownership and turn it into a park. This riverfront site has been used historically as a camping and picnic area, as well as a boat launch location for anglers and rafters. Public access was sometimes allowed and sometimes not, depending on who owned the property at the time.

The city is in the process of purchasing this site, with the intent to add another 4.5 acres at a later date. The park will include a boat and raft launch, restrooms, tent and RV campsites and a parking lot. The project’s total cost is $92,000.

Smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, steelhead and catfish are available to anglers in this section of the John Day River.

The Fish Restoration and Enhancement Program was created by the Oregon Legislature in 1989 and is funded by a surcharge on sport and commercial fishing licenses and commercial poundage fees. The program is overseen by a seven-member citizen board that reviews proposals and recommends funding for fish restoration and enhancement projects throughout the state.
