i returned yesterday from a "Big Pig Contest" held by Don Smith of Big Country Outfitters. the hunt was on the tejon ranch and was archery only. basically the exact same deal as tejon's POR, it's just archery only.

that ranch is awesome and i had no idea that hunting was so good that close to home. the hogs there are plentiful and WILD. they are tough critters. we arrived there at 5am for check in on friday morning and hunted until dark on sunday. that is when the contest ends. the largest hog was a 178 lb. boar (dressed) and had 3.5" tusks. it was pretty awesome.

i myself harvested a dry sow that dressed out at 90 lbs. not a huge pig, but she'll eat the best. if you archery hunt and want a fun and challenging hunt for a very reasonable price this is it. $300 gets you 3 full days of hunting, a bbq on saturday night, and they have guides there that will come out and get your hog out if you can't, at no charge. they are a great bunch of guys and i'm going back in june.

if you haven't hunted tejon ranch you owe it to yourself! it's great! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif

finally have a pic of my pig! hope this link works.

Kodiak: Congratulations! Sounds like a real successful trip.

Can you tell us what part of the ranch you were able to hunt? Was it limited to a special archery only area, or was the entire ranch open?

Thanks.

one track,
the hunt was limited to a specific area. the area was more than large enough though. according to don smith, the more archers he gets, the more land that tejon gives him to hunt on.

we hunted part of the south area. it's the same area that tejon runs the POR's on, but smaller. we were able to hunt the entire tejon canyon,
an area they call the flats, all around tejon resevoir #2, and whole lot of other areas that you could not cover in one weekend. you could cover it if you just hunted from the road, but not if you actually put in some effort.

if anyone is going to hunt the south region for the next POR email me and i'll give you specifics. at least what i know. there's a whole lot of country out there and some of it requires plenty of walking so pack a lunch and lots of water.

$300? Sold.

Archery? Sold.

Pig? Sold.

I'm in, where do I sign?

Never hunted for a wild pig before...maybe that should be my next target?

Anybody here affiliated with the TJR? I definately need more info on this, and perhaps a number to call. Would I be able to bring my girl(she'd want to just hang out, not actually hunt or even see the kill)?

KODIAKOUTDOORS, The area you hunted is not the South area but the North side of the Tejon Ranch. Don Smith does a great job. He is offering some super archery hunting. Glad you had a good hunt I know you will be back.

KODIAKOUTDOORS -

What's the technique for archery hunting for pigs? Are you in a tree stand in that orchard, or on the ground? Do you stalk these guys, or lay in wait and they they come into range?

How long of shots are typical?

Any idea on the success rates for the bow hunts?

You've got me thinking about this archery thing, and I need to figure out what to do to practice!
