Hey Houndsmen, when hunting Racoon how often do the coons go to ground instead of going up a tree? and what about Fox?

Terrierman,
I have never had a coon go to ground; most were treed and some were caught on the ground before they could tree.
As for fox, I have never had one go to ground either. Most of the fox I have run in the foothills treed while the ones I have run in the brush country refused to tree and were caught on the ground.

Around here it mostly depends on the terrain. If there's lots of holes in the ground then sometimes they will go in them. Most of the time, I'd guess 90%, they will go up a tree. But to make it even harder it'll be a den tree, which is a holow tree where they either stay during the day or just happens to be hollow. Then they go in the hole and you dont get to shoot them out. I find that smaller younger coons will run up the closest tree they can find but the older smarter ones usually head for a den, thats where good dogs come into play, if they pressure the coon they will force them up a tree instead of lettin them get to the den. Hope that helps.

No problem Guys , Thanks, I'm just looking for some work for my Little ones! **hint hint**
I don't have any Hounds for finding right now, right now we just cover terrian and check Holes etc...and hope for a Live Den. If there is something fresh they don't hesitate to enter, then it's a matter of getting them out.....I use locater Collars and shovels, and it get's interesting taking larger stuff using these 12 lbs dogs.
I would love to follow to pack of hounds. we keep our dogs in crates or on leads depending on the situation and bring em out only when needed.

Sure would be neat if you could teach them little boogers to climb trees. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-biggrin-aqua.gif No more slick trees for me haha. You might wanna check your game laws though in Indiana it is illegal to send ANY animal into a hole or den or dig them out, just a heads up.

This is how it reads in my reg book Terrierman:
It is illegal to remove wild animals from any cavity or den. It is illegal to disturb the nest of any mammal by shooting, digging, cutting or chipping or with the aid of smoke, fire, fumes, chemicals ferret or any other small animal, or any device introduced into the whole where the animal is sheltered.
Of course it could be different in CA. But from the way some of your all's crazy regs are out there I don't know if you'll be able to understand em.

We can still keep our varmnint populations under control. Just ain't supposed to bother them in a hole which really doesn't make since to me either but laws are laws I guess.
