I'm going to be buying a heavy-barreled .223 sometime in the next
month or two, and want something in the range of 4-16x to put on
top of it. I don't mind spending about $500-600, but that's about my
limit (unless given really compelling reasons to go higher). I like the
looks of the Nikon titanium scopes - any comments? Any other models
you think I should look at? I'm also considering a Zeiss Conquest
and possibly a Nikon monarch. One caveat - I think large objective
lenses are stupid and don't want anything 50mm or larger.

Thanks,
Brad

Go with The Nikon you won't be dissapointed. I tried looking through several different brands at the gun shop and went with the Nikon Monarch. Try this site they have some good prices on optics and free shipping too. bearbasin.com (http://bearbasin.com/)

I have never looked through the Nikon Titanium but, I wouldnt hesitate to purchase ANY Nikon product in a heartbeat. And I say this after just purchasing a Zeiss Conquest 3.5 10x44.
Both are great and I personally would love to see you get the Titanium and report back....
A very hard choice indeed....
Dont be led tempted to be led astray by the "Leopold Cult" that will most certainly post here shortly...Just kidding!!! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-shootin-green.gif

Thanks guys.

After looking over the Nikon web site some more, I don't think there is any
discernable difference in lenses between the Titanium and the normal Monarch
scopes, and an extra $150+ is a lot to pay for a different housing material, so
I think I'll buy a normal Monarch instead.

One of my motivations is to try out different scope manufacturers and see
for myself how they compare. So far, I have a Leupold VXIII 2.5-8 on my 6.5x55,
and a Burris 4-12x compact on my Ruger 10/22 with bull barrel (mean looking
little bulldog of a gun with a black Hogue rubber stock, black bull barrel and
nifty scope).

My next gun will be a Ruger #1V in .223 so I think I'll get the 5.5-16x Monarch
for it.

ps. I used to see the Bear Basin guys at some of the local gun shows here in
San Jose - really nice guys. I'd like to order from them (have before), but I end
up paying sales tax, and aside from the additional expense, sending $24 to
the CA gov't is like paying someone to beat me up (evil bastards). So maybe
I'll give SWFA a try.

Thanks,
Brad

I believe, the only diff between the Titanium and the Monarch, is the titanium tubes.
I guess they are REALLY tough....
