Bird lovers to watch prairie chicken mating ritual, take tours during the day
WASHINGTON, KAN. -- In an event to promote the preservation, appreciation, and propagation of wildlife in northeast Kansas, bird enthusiasts in Washington County will conduct a “Washington County Birding Event” April 5-6. The event will begin at 4 p.m. April 5 at Washington's Historic City Hall on North "C" Street. Drinks and snacks will be provided, and participants are encouraged to come early and visit with other birders and nature lovers to swap stories.
At 6:30 p.m., a tour will leave to enjoy the night sounds along the Blue River. On Saturday, April 5, the group will depart for prairie chicken booming grounds well before dawn. Throughout the rest of the day, participants will enjoy tours of local woods and wetlands, breakout sessions on various naturalist topics, and tours of local historical sites and businesses.
A banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. featuring guest speaker Ron Klataske, director of Audubon of Kansas and current recipient of the Kansas Wildlife Federation’s Conservationist of the Year Award.
At 6 a.m. on April 6, the group will head back to the booming grounds to view the fascinating mating ritual of the prairie chicken followed by a brisk morning hike through the diverse habitat of this region, where the northern Flint Hills meet the Glaciated and Smoky Hills regions of Kansas.
