I am planning a third season hunt in CO this year. I don't have any preference points so I am looking for some areas that I would have a good chance at drawing with no points. I am wanting to do some spot and stalk hunting on some open or semi-open terrain. I am not asking anyone to give away thier honeyholes, I'm just looking for some suggestions on where I could have a good chance at seeing some decent bucks, with a little sweat and time spent behind the glass.

I have done a little homework on a couple units. They are unit 22 and 62. I have hunted 22 in 2000, but I had some truck problems and was forced to come home early so I didn't really get a chance to learn the area.

Like I said I'm not asking for a free handout. I'm just looking for some suggestions on some places in these units or other units so I can begin my own homework. I am just looking for a chance at a 20" or better 4-pt (thats my goal) after a good spot and stalk type of hunt.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appretiated.

BuckSnort,
22 can be a good area....especially late season, but, it is a CWD area this year. Although I took a buck last year in Area 13 and he tested negative. It's a crap shoot. I have never hunted 62 and if you have experience there and know the area I'd go for that.
Good Hunting!

hunting4food,

Thanks for your help. Does this mean that hunters will have to check thier deer in somewhere this year?

Thanks again for your help.

BuckSnort,
Any area that is in orange in the Big Game Brochure has mandatory CWD testing. You can submit the head for free testing and they notify you of the results, either by phone (if your animal tests positive), or via the DOW Web Site. All other areas are voluntary ($17). I submitted mine last year just for piece of mind. This year the area I hunted last year is a CWD area (13) and it wasn't last year. CWD is spreading!
Again, good luck and good hunting.

Suggest buying the Hunt Data CD $50. It has flaws but, is the best thing out there for planning a big game hunt in Colorado, aside from first hand information from hunters and outfitters; good place to "begin your homework". Yearly upgrades are $12.

The area you are talking about are all pretty good. Area 62 is a good place. You just got to go and scout. Try to make a summer vacation out of it. That what I used to do.
