Fish and Game will teach students how to tie flies

To get youth interested in sportfishing, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's Sport Fish STREAM program, along with volunteers from the King Career Center, are teaching fly tying at 26 Anchorage-area schools. About 1,200 students in grades 1-12 will join classroom sessions that began Jan. 9 and run through Feb. 13. Students will tie four patterns that mirror the development stages in their classroom salmon egg incubators -- egg, eyed egg, alevin and fry -- and will end up with four fully functional flies. Equipment and materials have been donated by Eagle Claw and the Kenai River Sportfishing Association. Anyone with questions or comments can call Fritz Kraus at 267-2265 (office) or 441-8837 (mobile), or Lisa Olson at 267-2219.
