Special holiday wild turkey release set for Ontario

The winter landscape of Ontario, Canada, may not come to mind when picturing the ideal turkey habitat, but with a population of more than 48,000 birds, the Canadian province has proven itself to be an excellent environment for this majestic bird.

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the NWTF, in cooperation with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), will celebrate their cooperative efforts at restoring the wild turkey to the province by holding a special turkey release. The event will be held at 10 a.m. approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Ottawa, Ontario.

“We have worked with conservation agencies in several states in a trap-and-transfer project to increase the population of wild turkeys in Ontario since the 1980s,” said Joel Pedersen, NWTF biologist. “Wild turkeys have taken it from there and made tremendous strides in the province. We want to acknowledge everyone who has been associated with this important project and celebrate wild turkey conservation with this milestone release. This is the perfect holiday gift to Ontario.”

As it stands now, wild turkey populations in Ontario have grown from nearly nothing in 1907 to more than 35,000 birds. In recent years, Ontario has received Eastern wild turkeys from Michigan, Tennessee, New York and other states during the project.

The turkey release is part of ongoing education and management efforts by the OMNR, the NWTF and its many volunteers in celebration of the comeback of the wild turkey across North America. The release will also provide great educational opportunities for kids to learn more about the wild turkey and the wildlife that surround them. We hope you will join us for this spectacular event.
