Howdy folks,

you always hear of these special coated rifle cleaning rods that are for sale such as the Dewy coated rods, these type of coated cleaning rods help to reduce rifle muzzle/bore damages

well here is a easily made ''homebrew'' version

to make yourself one, it is as simple as placing a long section of heat shrink tubing over your existing cleaning rod and heating it with a cigarette lighter or match

you can get the heat shrink in longer sections at most electrical supply houses and also find the proper size needed

one note worth mentioning is that after you place the heat shrink tubing on the cleaning rod that it may no longer go into your rifle barrel as it increases the diameter a small amount due to the thickness of the heat shrink tubing itself

one way around this is to get yourself a smaller caliber rod and then place the heat shrink over it to get the proper size for certain caliber guns
example:
if you get a .22 caliber cleaning rod and then place the heat shrink over it you will increase the size enough(approx. .20 thousandths) that it will be very tight in a .22 caliber bore or not fit at all depending on the original size of the rod but it will be just right for a larger caliber such as .24/.25 caliber

so if you own a .30 caliber and want an easily made coated cleaning rod , buy a .25 caliber rod and place the heat shrink over it to produce a neat coated cleaning rod that will not harm the rifle muzzle/bore

another aspect to doing this is that the multi-piece screw together rods will no longer come apart and you will have sort of a one piece rod

cleaning solutions don't seem to be a problem with most of the types of heat shrink tubing and work just fine with gun cleaning solvents other than the most harsh ones and only then does it seem to soften the heat shrink coating

Have Fun !
