PAIR CITED FOR HUNTING AT NIGHT
12/23/2002
Dennis W. Farris 20, of Lake Charles and Ronald D. Kern Jr. 22, of St. Amant were cited by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents for allegedly killing a deer during illegal hours. The doe deer was killed in the DeRidder area of Beauregard Parish on November 15, around 2:30 in the morning.
Agents began an investigation after they received a complaint from a witness who heard a shot in his front yard. He observed a pickup leaving and then returning to where a dead doe deer lay in his front yard. The witness watched the driver of the pickup truck load the deer and leave. The witness, who had a brief conversation with the driver, recognized him as Ronald D. Kern Jr., who had lived next door.
Agents interviewed Kern and obtained a written voluntary statement in which Kern implicated an accomplice identified as Dennis W. Farris. According to Kern, Farris shot the deer while Kern was driving the pickup. Agents interviewed Farris and obtained a written voluntary statement validating Kern’s statement.
A .300 magnum rifle with scope and an ice chest were seized. Remains of the deer were recovered near the Sabine River. Farris and Kern were cited for taking deer during illegal hours and hunting from a moving vehicle. Farris and Kern were also issued a summons to jointly pay civil restitution of $524.54 to LDWF for the deer.
Taking deer during illegal hours is punishable by a fine of up to $950, up to 120 days in jail, or both, plus court costs and forfeiture of seized items. Hunting from a moving vehicle carries a fine of up to $500, up to 90 days in jail, or both, plus court costs.
Agents participating in the case were LDWF Sr. Agent David Liles and Lt. Jesse Savoie.
