Access and Habitat Program Funds Malheur River Watershed Improvements

VALE – The Malheur Watershed Council has been awarded a $3,600 grant from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Access and Habitat Program to be a habitat improvement project in the Malheur River watershed.

The Access and Habitat Program, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, U.S. Forest Service, Malheur Soil and Water Conservation District and three USFS grazing permitees are working together to install cattle guards, construct nine miles of riparian fence, and develop off-stream watering devices within two grazing allotments in Malheur County. A&H funds will purchase two cattle guards.

The project is being implemented on the North Fork and Flag Prairie allotments on the Malheur National Forest in Grant County, allowing them to be divided into separate pastures for improved livestock grazing management. This also will help protect riparian areas along streams identified as bull trout habitat. The water developments will benefit Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, grouse and other wildlife. Cattle guards will prevent livestock from wandering into environmentally sensitive areas.

The participating landowners will allow access by permission to their lands adjacent to the project area.

Created by the Oregon Legislature in 1993, the A&H Program is funded by a $2 surcharge on hunting licenses. Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations, and others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access projects throughout the state.
