Dec. 14, 2002
The first group of hunter-killed deer tested for chronic wasting disease came up clean, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced Friday.
"We're pleased that we haven't found a positive yet," said Mike DonCarlos, research manager for the DNR Division of Wildlife. "But we've only got about 10 percent of the results . . . back right now. There are still a lot of samples to be tested."
The first batch of results come from tests run on 414 samples collected from hunters at registration stations and tests run on 390 samples collected by veterinarians at the request of hunters.
During Minnesota's firearms deer season, about 5,000 samples were collected from hunters' deer.
DNR officials expect tests to be completed on all the samples by the end of January.
Chronic wasting is a fatal brain disease known to infect deer and elk. The state's first and only case of chronic wasting disease was found earlier this year at an Aitkin elk farm.
