By DAVID RAINER, Mobile Register
Talk about calamari for everyone (just kidding).
A rare diamond squid that weighed 37 pounds washed up on the beach at Gulf Shores last week and was recovered by the Marine Resources Division.
An unidentified caller left a message that the large squid was seen on West Beach, and Lt. Bob Hastings retrieved the squid.
Marine Resources' Patricia Stump and Jenni Wren were able to identify it as an adult male diamond squid.
Some of the tentacles of the squid had been eaten or torn away by the time it was recovered, but the rarity of the find led to a call to the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.
A representative from the Smithsonian confirmed the institute wanted the specimen for its national collection.
The institute also asked permission to use photos of the squid on its tree-of-life Web site.
The last diamond squid found in the U.S. was in 1994 off the Florida coast near Jacksonville.
SSA awards event :
The Saltwater Sportsman's Association Christmas party and awards ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the MCLEA club on Riviere du Chien.
