I'm looking for a new truck and need a four door to truck the new bundle of joy around. I am looking for comments on the F150 supercrew.

I also like the Toyota 4 door. I currently have a 95 toyota xtracab and like it. My only concern about the Toyota is that it only has a 5 foot bed. The ford has a 5 1/2 bed but it's deeper.

Is there anything I need to consider for towing ? I will be towing about 3000 pounds.

thanks

Ive got a 95 tacoma......and love it. If your looking for a full size truck check out the TUNDRA with the new V8.....its supposed to have more HP and torque than any Chevy or ford. I just dont think they make the crew cab yet. They have the 4 door extended cab which is really nice.

I went form a Super Cab to a Crew Cab, Best thing I ever did. At the time I had kids in car seats. The Super Cab was a pain in the butt (didn't have a 3rd door on it either).

I personally wouldn't get a truck that doesn't have an 8ft bed. All my friends that have full size trucks with short beds regret it. Usually they put a tool box in the bed then you loose another 2 ft. Now they have a full size truck and need a trailer to haul an ATV. Nice to be able to load it all in a truck and go.

That's my .02 worth.

Good Luck

I drive a 97Ford ex cab with the third door plenty of room in the back seat ,with a 6 1/2' bed great truck .
If you're thinking of new the F150 excab now comes with 2half doors ,
not as much room as the Crew cab but plenty for car seats ,I have two small ones myself . O ya plenty of power for towing http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-biggrin-aqua.gif

I'm a truck man and thats all I have ever driven. I wouldn't buy a ford v8 from personal experience. I had a 99 f150 with the 5.4L and it spit out a head gasket before 13,000m . Ford would only replace my block with a remanufactured piece of junk motor. I fought teeth and nails and delt with several dealerships and Corp Ford. I ended up with a new truck that had a used motor that leaked coolent and they couldn't fix it. My cousins f150 also spit out a head gasket and a van at work with the same motor did the same. Ford does make a good V6 though. If you can go with a toyota they will last you forever but the tocomas don't have much power. The Tundras V8 got good ratings but not as powerful as American iron. Toyotas are also very pricy. A Tocoma cost the same as a full size ford or chevy. Ford , Dodge and Chevy make more power in torque and horses. I not brand specefic but I traded the ford in for a Chevy 2500Hd and I love it. The gas mileage isn't good with 4.10 gearing and 6.0L 300Hp motor. I would go with Chevy 1/2 ton with 5.3L. Good on gas and lots of power. They also make a 1500HD with 4 full size doors and the same 6.0L motor. Check out this site just like this one but about trucks. http://forums.pickuptruck.com/ubbthreads.php?Cat=

Interest rates are good right now I just refinanced my truck for 4% thats unheard of. Saved me $100 mo. Anyways good luck with what ever you choose. If you have any questions in regards to a specefic truck or purchasing from the dealer email me. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-wavin-yel.gif

I don't want this to sound like a truck advertisement but I have been a Ford truck guy most of my life. In '94 my new F-150 gave me all kinds of problems and so did the dealer. I had to take my many problems to the Ford mediation board and they really screwed me.

I got rid of that lemon and tried a new F-150 in '95. After 9 months of agrivation and lawsuits, Ford agreed to replace the '95 truck with a demo that had about 6,000 miles on it. Very nice truck. I loved it until it blew a ring gear in the differential and somehow locked up the transmission at around 45,000 miles. Once again the dealer turned into my enemy on the battlefield. FMC screwed me over and over again on this one. I've wasted lots of money on these Fix-Or-Repair-Daily vehicles and I have had it with Ford.

I purchased a new GMC Sierra in '98. Excellent performance and not one problem for 52,000 miles. Traded it in for another new one in '01 and it's perfect. More power, better handling, more comfortable, tows my heavy stuff better than any of the Fords I've ever owned. I have not been in a dealer's service department (or any other service gerege) for almost five years now it feels great.

I hate to have to tell this story because I loved my Fords up until '94. But I'll never go back.

I have a Ford F-150 Super Crew & so does my dad & brother. We love them! I actuaally like the shorter bed. I also looked at the Toyota 4 door. The problem was the price. It was almost the same as the full size truck. I have 2 kids, but it seems like I always have some extras going with us. The cab is perfect with all the room. Yes the bed is a little short, but what are you going to do with it. If you are going to haul alot of stuff all the time well maybe it is too small. I ended up putting a hard cover on it & love it. It is like a huge trunk that I can lock. My vehicle is pretty much our family wagon. It always has cheerleading stuff, stadium seats, ice chest, & my fire gear in it most of the time. I hauled a 7' christmas tree in it the other day with the tailgate down. Get the tow pkg. & you would be set. Hope this helps.

Personally, I have a F-250 CC PSD. When I looked at all the fullsize trucks with the different packages, Ford had what I needed the most. I personally couldn't see spending the extra 7 grand for a Chevy, and Dodge only had a dually in the 3/4 ton. I have never had any problems with my ford, or the other fords that I own, outside of the normal wear and tear. I have a buddy that owns a supercrew and he loves it. Like me he has never had any problems. Both of us have little ones and the four dour is the only way to go IMHO.

They only advice I can offer is go out and drive them all, sit in them, bring the baby seat and see how it fits in all the different trucks. Then go to the fleet dealer and see if you can get fleet price or better.
Good luck and let us know what you picked.

Here's a list of 3 buddy's and my Ford truck for comparison:

1999 F150 stepside

110,000 miles. no problems

1999 F150 supercab

92,000 miles no problems

1999 F150 supercab

78,000 miles needed an alternator

2000 F150 supercab

76,000 miles no problems.

I've had 3 Ford trucks. A Bronco and now I am on my second F150. No problems with any of them. My brother now drives the Bronco and Its got 135000 on it and going strong. We have only just recently replaced the starter and water pump and the switch to roll down the back window. Thats it. My old F150 had 76000 when I sold it and I never had a single, I mean single, problem. Even the battery lasted 6 years. I love my new F150 but it only has 18,000 miles and has already developed some rattles. That is my only complaint. But then again my girlfriend has a 2001 Tahoe that has never even seen a dirt road and it rattles like crazy. It has also been into the shop at least 5 times for warranty work. The emergency brake, the throttle body, the daytime running lights, the seat adjustment motor, and the stereo have all needed replacement. I think you should just buy what you like and pray you get a good one. There are problems with all brands. But I'll still stick with Fords.

You will get great opinions and bad opinions but here is my take.

I have bought fords for the last 10 years and have never had that many problems and NO serious problems. I do all of my scheduled maint on time and religously service the oil every 3k. I treat my trucks like trucks meaning I don't baby them and they do go off roading a good bit.

1993 Ford ranger bought it new put 62k on it...never went to the shop 4 banger.

1993 f150 4x2 extended cab bought it new put 132k on it...went to the shop for a transmission leak and an altinator, 5.0 ltr

1997 f150 ext cab put 89k never went to the shop 5.0 ltr v8

1999 f150 ext cab put 82k never went to the shop 4.6 ltr v8

2001 f150 super crew 4x4 with 79k never went to the shop 5.4 ltr v8

Just finished buying a 2003 super crew 4x4 5.4 ltr v8

My wife has had 3 expeditions over the last several years and have never had any problems out them as well. all with the 5.4 ltr v8's and none of them have every had anything serious with them. You will have problems but a rattle here and there or wiper motor or the such. I have never had any engine failures or transmission failures.

My brother owns a 2002 super crew and has never had any problems out of it.

My neighbor has a 2002 super crew and it had a transmission leak and an output seal leak on the transfer.

I personally love the 5.4 ltr v8 but the gas miliage is only about 14 in the city and 18 on the hwy. The 4.6 was very lacking in power though they boasted that it was better than the 302 it replaced...I owned each and can tell you it didn't compare. I haul boats and tracktors around and with the 5.4 ltr I have pleanty of power. I haul two kids and a car seat in my supercrew everyday and I love it. It's also up to the challenge when I go hunting. I thought I would hate the short bed but the depth actually makes up for it and anything long I just leave the tailgate down and tie the load good. I keep a littel box in the back of the truck about 2 ft long x 1 ft high x 1 ft wide to keep chains and straps in that sits in the back of the truck. It's big enough for what I need yet doesn't take up that much room, it's made by delta. I used to have a full size toolbox and all it became was an endless chatch all and half the stuff in it never got used.

I will continue to buy fords despite what others say and with a track record like this I would be dumb to change.

Good Luck!!!

IMO, Ford sucks and when the warrenty runs out you will regret. All I want for christmas is a ford engineer for an hour so we can discus some possible improvements http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rolleyes-green.gif

I'd go with the toy. If you go with the ford, dont get a truck with the E4OD auto tranny. It cannot handle towing heavy loads. We blew ours out at 35,000 and the tranny shop I go to (now them for many years) has done many rebuilds on E4OD's because of towing heavy loads. If you dont have to work on it eventually get a ford.

Can you tell that I dispise fords http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-rant-mode.gif

I've got a 2001 Tundra 4x4 with access cab. Those back seats are definitely kid-sized.

Largest passenger count was me (6'), my wife (5'10"), dog (65 lbs) and mom-in-law (5'4") and that was the upper limit of comfort for a long trip. Of course , results will vary depending on the sizes of you and yours.

Since the missus and I haven't had kids yet I figure I've got at least another 6-7 years before I'm in the market again for another pickup. By then Toyota should have something bigger, unless I decide to go diesel.

If you want the big bed and still carry 3-5 passengers, a 250/2500 class crew cab by the other three (GM/Chevy, Ford, Dodge...) would suit that better.

As for what's under the hood, the engine is reliably Toyota; really little to nothing to complain about. Being from an auto-repair family, Toyotas didn't show up very often outside of every day maintenance, unless abused. As for Ford/GM, their trucks tend to be much better than their sedans, unless you are looking at their flagship sportscars (Mustang, Corvette), with Ford having more random problems their quirkier "innovations" (late 80's paint, and quick-connect A/C lines quickly come to mind).

Shag, one question for you. Was the dog up front and the mother-in-law in the truck bed ?? HEHEHEHE

I'm using the kbb.com website and I have the ford coming in 10k above the Toyota. Are your regions different in price or am I doing something wrong with the options ?

I'm gonna go look today. I need to buy before Xmas because the wife is going to start work next week. I'm gonna go to Ford first and then I'll stop by the Toyota dealer. I like the Tundra (especially the towing package that it comes with) but I think I want the full 4 door access so if I do go with the Toyota it will probally be with the crew cab.

I wanted to put the roll-n-lock on the bed but I'm not sure if I'll go with that if I get the Toyota. The bed is short enough.

Decisions, decisions, decisions......

Thanks for your help guys.

internet prices are usually off in my experience. You will get a better deal and more truck in a ford. Toyota will last you longer and less problems.

New bundle of joy? What is it - an ATV, a boat??? Ohhhh, I forgot, a child, congratulations.
Mine are moved out so now I think in terms of things with a motor.
Whatever you do, try to get non-cloth seats for all those years of spilled soda, shakes, juice boxes that are so much fun to squeeze, candy that falls out of the mouth, gum that looses its taste and needs to be hidden, sickness (both ends), and anything else their cunning little minds can conceive. The baby might look innnocent right now but it's plotting ways to desecrate the truck. Just has to get that hand/eye coordination thing going.

Cobbersmom, excellent advice !!!!

Didn't really want to get leather seats but in retrospect I might just have to. I remember going fishing with my friend and his 2 girls and they dug into the lunch bag before we got to the boat. They helped theirselves to the peanutbutter sandwhiches. It wasn't pretty and thankfully it wasn't my truck.

You could always do like the back of a copcar, plastic seat & rubber floor so you can hose it out lol. In my baja bug I had rubber floormats & denim covered seats so it would clean easy, "broke-in" denim looks pretty good in a bug lol

Well...................................

I got the Toyota. NOT the truck but the Camry. :o I'm truckless for the first time in my life. It doesn't feel good but I had to do the the right thing for the family. The wife only has a 2 door car and I don't want her braking her back loading and unloading the baby. I'll get a truck before the spring turkey season or as soon as I sell my boat. BTW Toyota didn't have any crew cabs in my tri-state area.

I am not a big Ford fan. I am more a fan of Diamler-Chrysler and Toyota. But my cousin has a 2000 Expedition with 50,000 miles and he has not had any problems with it. But then again I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee with over 280,000 miles and it still has the orig. motor and trans. I haven't seen many Fords or Chevy's with that many miles. Go Jeep!

One of my Bajas had a jerry-rigged ragtop in it and every time it rained I would get an inch of water in the pan. It would slosh around while I drove until it finally drained out. It was an effective way to cleanup all the spilled soda and coffee. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-idea-blu.gif

I've got a 2000 F-150 and it just hit 75,000 miles. I regularly change oil, every 5K and then an airfilter when needed. Changed the trans fluid once. It is so far the best vehicle I've ever bought.

Qbn,

I just sold my 1990 Cherokee 4x4 after 12 years and 240,000 miles. Never had any major work done on it and every 3K, they drained 6 qts and put 6 in. I never had to add oil in between and it passed smog first try every time. You must have the 4.0 in-line 6 too.

If that that first bit seems off topic, here's my point: A lot of you Ford guys seem to buy an awful lot of trucks and you're pretty pleased that they're still decent before they even hit 100K miles. What's up with that? In the age of 100K mi. warranties, any properly maintained vehicle should be good for 200K or more.

I don't have anything against Fords, in fact, I'm looking for a replacement and the F-150 supercrew 4x4 is on my short list, but the read-between-the-lines part of some of these posts is not a confidence builder. I was leaning toward a Tundra, but that access cab is just too small.

DKScott ,

I know it seems like I go thru a lot of trucks...and in fact I do. But it's all by choice. Every one of the trucks I got rid of were in perfect working order I mainly wanted either a New truck for the change in size and one time just for a change. Every time I purchased one it was a little bigger or had that little something extra I was looking for in a truck...

Ranger---first little truck
Extendend cab --- needed a bigger truck first child
extendend cab --- wanted the new body style
extendend cab --- wanted the third door
supercrew --- second child here and wasn't going thru what I did with the car seat in the extended cab
supercrew --- just wanted a little upgrade from cloth to leather and a longer waranty

My wife on the other hand just wanted a change on all of her's.

You see it's all about choice. Now this supercrew I have I will probably keep for a long time...at least 3 or 4 years, I hope. It does have EVERYTHING that I wanted and needed as well as a few options that I could care less about. I put about 30K+ a year on a truck so the miles rack up quickly and let me tell you trade in is not that great when the truck is only 3 years old with 90k+ on it....OUCH!!!!!!! So I try to trade at about 2 1/2 - 3 years and below 90k to keep my tradein value up as much as possible. Once the truck hits 100k you can't give it away, I learned that the hard way.

My '99 Ex-cab 4 X 4 just hit 60k and hasn't even had a hiccup. So far, it's the best truck I've owned. The older Chevy's ('92 - '97) seemed to have lots of gremlins. Our '93 Sub. went through 2 trannys, 4 radiators, 3 batteries and 3 starters. All but the last radiator & starter were warrentied. After the last starter on Father's Day, she went out to pasture. Our new '02 Sub is great so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

OK, today I changed the oil on my wife's new Chevy. What a dumb truck. My Ford F-150 4X4 has a brilliant remote oil filter position - easy to drain & access. The old Suburban had the oil filter right above a half-shaft. The new one is stuck right between the oil pan & tranny. The only way I could get my fingers around it was if I were a 125lb runt. Heck, I even had trouble getting an oil filter wrench around it. Someone please make engineers use what they design - maybe we'd get better stuff ( like Fords ) http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-thumbs-up-aqua.gif
