Person needed to serve on Wildlife Advisory Council in Northeastern Utah

Vernal — A person to represent agricultural interests is needed on the Northeastern Regional Wildlife Advisory Council (RAC) to serve the balance of a vacated, unexpired term that's slated to end June 30, 2003.

The council hears wildlife management proposals from the Division of Wildlife Resources, takes public input about the proposals and makes recommendations to the Utah Wildlife Board about which proposals it feels the board should approve.

The vacant position represents an agricultural interest in wildlife management. The RAC member serves as a liaison between the agricultural communities of place and interest within the northeastern region of Utah and the RAC, conveying input and information among all interested parties to enhance the recommendations presented to the Utah Wildlife Board by the Northeastern RAC. This person may also be a sportsman/woman who hunts, fishes or traps, and/or someone who participates in nonconsumptive-oriented wildlife recreation.

Agricultural oriented groups are invited to submit the names of people they would like to have serve on the RAC. Individuals who are interested in serving must be nominated by an agricultural group, who may submit their top two candidates for each position.

Groups must submit nominations by Jan. 2, 2003. Nomination forms are available at the Division of Wildlife Resources' Internet Web site http://www.wildlife.utah.gov. To find the form click on the Meetings selection on the home page.

In addition to submitting a form for each person nominated, groups should also supply information explaining why each nominee would make a good RAC member.

Nominations can be faxed to Mr. Dana Dolsen, RAC/Board coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, at (801) 538-4709, or mailed to:

"RAC members receive special orientation to become familiar with the wildlife management decision-making process in Utah," Dolsen says. "The Northeastern RAC meets about 10 times annually and most of the meetings are held in Vernal. Meetings are generally held on Monday evenings and last from three to five hours. RAC members are considered volunteers but they're eligible to be reimbursed for actual meeting attendance expenditures, such as meals and mileage. Overnight travel rarely occurs. RAC members are not allowed more than two unexcused absences at RAC meetings a year."

The final decision about who will fill the vacant positions will be made by the executive director of the Department of Natural Resources, in consultation with the director of the Division of Wildlife Resources.
