Finally after putting in for just about every hunt in the state I got a draw for Cougar wild life area w/ a guide. Jan 21 should be great! Has any one hunted there before? I think it's private right? I don't even know if it is goose or duck. Any info would be great.

Cougar wildlife area? You mean the bars in Newport Beach here in Socal? Oh not those type of cougars......
Just kidding but I did my CWA hunt earlier this month and they are a blast, best $5 raffle ticket I ever bought. Have fun!

Cougar wetlands is part of the Consumnes River Preserve near Galt. It is private and I believe the CWA hunt is for Ducks but some Specs and Snows might be in the area as well. I think at least one member of the hunting party must be a Junior or mobility impaired.

No, never hunted there. A friend of mine has hunted near there at Stone Lakes twice this season and didn't have great results. The weather has these ducks in a nocturnal mode, we really need something to get them out of the pattern they are in. Tons of birds in the Sac Valley, they just aren't cooperating.
Sounds like it will still be a fun time for you and your son getting out in a natural marsh.

Well, we didn't get jumped by any old Cougars at the Cougar Wildlife area (dangit) but I am happy to report that this was(according to my son) "the hunt of a lifetime!" We ended up with 11 Mallards by 10:30 and that was enough for us. Wow, it was really an Epic freeking duck hunt! All Mallards and missed some shots for wood ducks and some Pintail. The guys that were in the second blind hit two canadian geese, two wood ducks and a Sprig. But we slaughterer the Mallards! This was a guided CWA (California Waterfowl Association) lotto draw, private land, hunt and boy did we hit the jackpot! The guide Paul was really a top notch caller and a wildlife biologist on top of it so he was a "google search" of information! He called them right down the pipe so my 10 year old could hit them with his 20 ga. classic! The week before was my son's first duck that we jumped out of Hot Creek. A nice fat Widgeon. Then for his second hunt ever we get dive-bombed by Mallards! What a great way to end the season. He is hooked as bad as me now haha! Just wanted to thank CWA and our guide Paul Phillips one more time. It was truly "the hunt of a lifetime!"
