hogs

you know i love hunting on this base because you get to see things that not very many other people see but the hogs can be vaery hard to find...i have been hunting VAFB for a few months and have only seen one hog in the "C" zones. i hear shots all the time and i can find every type of sign you could imagine but i still have gotten the chance to make a shot. i hun C1 and C3 mainly and have walked C2 before. any opinions? advice?

I would be hunting B-4 take 35th to new beach rd turn right and hunt to the left by the river bottom and look for an old bunker and broken fence where the hogs are coming thru half hour befor dark shot gun or black powder that is my number one spot get there out there 2hrs early there are few other that hunt this area i would also be huntting B-3 with it open to deerhunt the hogs will be moving

Vandenberg AFB is in Santa Barbara county, about 50 miles north of Santa Barbara and an equal distance south of San Luis Obispo.

338 Lapua: You are hunting in good areas. I can't really say why you aren't seeing hogs, because we have been in both areas recently and seen upwards of 20. No dinkers either; all good sized animals. We passed on six boar-hogs last night 'cause they were only about 125 lbs. Not big enough for my hunting partner.

If you want some advice, come see me at the gun club. I'm on tomorrow, Wednesday p.m. and Thursday. I can show you on the map.

I'll agree with Alan that you're hunting in some good areas. I've taken pigs in both those areas and have seen pigs in every rifle area on the base. My best advice is to spend more time on the glass and you'll spot them eventually. There's no such thing as using your binoculars/spotting scope enough up there. Also, if you're walking back to your truck when it's still light, you didn't stay long enough. They'll pop out in the last couple minutes of shooting light.

You can take your chances with getting advice from Alan. I've been there before...desperate to see a hog and listening to his advice. I followed what he told me to the letter. Of course, I never saw a pig for several days. About the time you're convinced he's just been messing with you, you'll see him driving his truck into the area he told you about and shortly thereafter you'll hear a shot. He's kind of annoying that way. I think he has them tied up behind the bushes or something where only he knows how to find them! I've sat at one end of canyon and watched him and a partner climb down into the other end of the same canyon (a very long way from me), shoot a hog and wheel it out on his game cart...the only pig I ever saw was the one they were dragging. I can't explain it.

All joking aside...it's worth a trip down to the Rod N Gun Club to talk to him. He's plenty free with his info and is quite helpful. I learned a bunch from talking to him and it helped me with getting the pigs that I did while I was hunting Vandenberg. Make sure he gives you the heads up about coming down Rattlesnake (the south end of C1) while it's raining...you don't want to know how I learned that the hard way.

Was worth every penny! Probably the best case of beer I bought in my life! I think I'd still be there. Along those lines...I got laughed at out at our deer lease here in Florida for having the game cart in the truck. The other guys all have 4-wheelers. After wheeling out 2 pigs for them where their 4-wheelers couldn't get to them I have noticed carts in the back of 2 other trucks now! I even managed to collect my own couple cases of beer!
