Hi, I'm 54 years old. I'm a volunteer dog handler with the Iditarod. Whitetail deer hunt in Georgia, Maryland and Alabama. Elk hunt in Colorado and just moved to California in NOV. Originally from Alabama.

Anyway, moved here to take care of mother in law. Had to leave all my hunting buddies back east. I just need someone who wants to learn to hunt or just wants to go hunting and camping. We all admit, campfires are better with someone to lie to, smoke cigars, drink terrible coffee and stay up too late staring at the fire.

I'm making my own 10x12 canvas outfitter wall tent so snow camping and rifle hunting is not a problem. Anyway, I live in Sacramento area and hunt d-5 as of yesterday and today. I bow hunt, muzzleloader and rifle hunt.

I know I'm not the only one that hates to go hunting by themself.

If you ever want to go after ducks gimme a shout. I know youre not much of a shotgun guy from the classified forum, but just putting it out there. Welcome.

Yes, being from Alabama originally we didn't do much duck hunting. But living in Maryland with the Eastern Shore I should have gotten into it. We mostly Quail and Dove hunted in Alabama coming up. Still love the dove hunts, if I ever get the chance. I have a Sweet 16 Browning that my dad bought the year I was born. Would love to go hunting with that. I've won 2 shotguns at the Ducks Unlimited Banquets that I've been to. Those are fun and for an excellant cause for all of us. Thanks again, Grizzly

I'm not too far from you, and always looking for someone to hunt with! I hunt D3-5 with bow or rifle, bear, rabbit, squirrel, turkey, duck, dove, whatever. Or rather, I would like to do all those. I have some friends taking me on my first dove hunt next week, and letting tag along on their deer hunt this weekend. I didn't do too well on my own last weekend.

Fire me off a PM anytime you're up for a hunt. I know a few of the public places around here and starting to pick up some private ones. I have all my own gear and plenty of gas in the truck.

Thanks for the offer. New guys appreciate all the help we can get.

I'm 50, started hunting last year and am finding the learning curve is kinda unforgiving of mistakes. While I'm down in So. Orange County, I would love to hunt bear in the D3-5 area with someone who knows the routine and can teach me proper field dressing and skinning. I work 75-90 hrs a week (tied to a PC) so when I make time to get away, it needs to be quality time w/o cellphones, email, texts, PMs, faxes, yada yada yada. I need to get away from all my stresses and immerse myself in something that completely blots out the reality of my day to day life. Hunting completely erases everything for me, partially because everything is so new, partly because I am not "comfortable" in the field and get an electrical charge from all the "not knowing what's out there" sense of adventure. My new campsite coffeemaker is great though...so no bad coffee in the morning. <g> Maybe I could drive up sometime and we can take a stab at it? I appreciate the opportunity to discuss it. What do you do?

Where's Bruce? Did ya get the PM. Forgot to add, field dressing no problem, I worked in my dad's meat slaughter plant for years as a kid. He taught me YOUNG. Also, no need for butcher, I have all we need to process.

Iditarodgriz, Welcome to CA. I just moved out of Fair oaks, but still not far from you. I have a bunch of friends that live in O.V. I am looking to do some Hog and Deer hunting this year with my Riffle. If you are interested in a hunt let me know. I am petty new to Hunting, but always looking for a partner to go hunt with. I am 29 and in decent shape. I have my D3-D5 Deet tag and am pretty much ready to go.

Well, can't wait till coldest day of next week up in D-5. I'm gonna go up after work and hunt, probably below Ice House.

Last week on Mon.-Tues. I was up at Camp Creek camping. Hunted Grizzly Flat Road between North/South Road off Morman Immigrant Trail Road. Had 2 of the worst things to hurt deer hunting; Full Moon and Hot Weather. Anyway, camped at camp creek, NO TENT; Moon was so bright you couldn't hardly see any stars, IT WAS GREAT!. If you have never hunted and primitive camped, try it. Yes, I do enjoy conveniences but, ya gotta get out of the comfort zone. Anyway, had a great time. Talk later, Griz

Thinking of doing a DIY Rifle Elk Hunt in Unit 33 of Colorado. We would be anywhere from 8800 to 10,500 ft. elevation, give or take a few. It would be in later October, 2nd. Rifle Season, over the counter tags. Anyone interested, let me know. I will have the wall tent to sleep in and I'm an excellant cook. I have a Ford Sport Trax Explorer 4x4 plus chains, so getting up and down the road out of New Castle would not be a problem. (We don't stay up until they get 2 ft. of snow, DUH!!) Anyway, food for thought; I've hunted that area, have all the maps we need and know where we have seen and harvested elk. Never a big one though. So, anyone that's always wanted to go Elk hunting, Do It Yourself style, give me some feedback. License is around $575 (need to check, they may have cow elk tags for 1/2 that amount) plus share gas expenses. Must have a hunter safety card, no matter what age in Colorado. Chance of a lifetime for a couple of guys. Griz

Off Interstate 70 we would get off at New Castle, Colorado. Then drive up to Whiter River National Forest to the Flat Tops. Places to look for on map are Triangle Park, Meadow Lake, Spring Cabin, Corral, Cliffs, Gravel Pit, etc. All names of good spots for Elk. Have never been without seeing Elk and Mule Deer.

Elk is definitely on my to do list, wasn't aware you could purchase tags OTC. I'm off from Oct 21st thru 30th and I have that great coffeemaker. :rotflmao: Cigars? You bet. Lots of BS stories...unlimited volumes. Bow & rifle. Did you get my PM w/ phone number? This is me. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1265694905

Yes, got message, sounds like we have a few things career wise in common. Will be getting more info. Only rifle season then. Colorado has Draws and Over Counter for Archery in Sept. Then they have a limited draw First Rifle Season then they have the 9 day Over the Counter rifle hunt. I usually buy a Mule deer tag for unit 23 because I hunt in that unit due to draw for Mule deer in unit 33, I don't always get drawn. 23 is right across the road from the Buford hiway. Will be posting more info. Griz

I'm a noob when it comes to the hunting scene but I would like to hook up with ya just to learn a few tricks. I'm also in the Sacramento area, not far from Orangevale. You didn't mention how you did in D-5. Ice House is also a great spot for Trout, too.

Good stuff Griz.

I'll have to keep the Elk/ mule deer trip in mind. maybe next year?

I live about an hour from you. I hunt D3. I sometimes get lucky with decent private land for Pheasant. Gonna try Ducks this year.

Can always use a good hunting partner. Have been spending the last 3 years learning ever so slowly. Next big step will to actually harvest something, lol.
I just like to get out and enjoy the land and the camaraderie.

Yes, more memories are made afield with a hunting partner than than the actual harvest. When I was young I shot everything in sight. Now, I have slowed down, enjoying the view and not worried about my ego if I harvest an animal or not.

Went with my new hunting buddy that I met here. Our first time of meeting was 5:30 am Saturday, left McDonald's and went to Ice House.

(No Deer was seen by either) Hunted for close to 5 hours looking.

But, first time I've gotten Altitude Sickness; nausea, headache, shortness of breath and sleepy. Had to pull over at Fresh Pond and let new buddy drive. Felt really bad about it but, it does happen to the best. We had gone up to Wright's Lake and that was just enough altitude to get me.

Anyway, if my buddy's reading this, can't wait for Turkey Season.

I urge all of ya, find a buddy and keep on hunting. Anyone wants to get a pig hunt or turkey hunt together, let's talk. Griz.

I have met some good people to hunt with on this site. I have even hunted with Jesse although we didn't get anything twice in a row.XD helped my son harvest his first deer at FHL . Anyway if you guys want to get into duck hunting apply ASAP for your public refuge reservations and if you get one post it on the waterfowl forum you will find friends if not JHO try the Refuge Forum there are always waterfowl hunters with all the gear who are willing to help a newbie if they have a low ressie #. Just go to Big 5/Turners or whatever hunting store is in your area.

i was wondering about that colorado elk, that tag is it good for the whole state or just i zones?
im 19 and trying to learn as much as i can

During 2nd. & 3rd. rifle season; over the counter tags are good for whole state.(NO DRAW TAGS FOR 2nd. & 3rd. Rifle Seasons). Limited Draw tags for archery, muzzleloader and first rifle season are good only for that unit that you get drawn. During archery season they have some draw tags for certain units and over the counter tags for certain units. Does that make any sense?

RABBIT HUNTERs with BOW!!!
Ordered me 3 small game broadheads today. Anyone want to go Jack Rabbit hunting with bows let me know. Gonna go on BLM land near Folsom. BOW HUNTING ONLY property. Just let me know and I can let you know my work schedule.

This is a great way to stay on top of your game before Turkey season gets here. I'm a BOW nut. Yes, still love my Browning 7mm with Zeiss scope and my Remington 280 with Leupold but, that stick and string is fun.

Anyway, I'm gonna go kill me a wusky wabbit!!

Therapy of outdoors is PRICELESS!!!

Oh young one's, always remember, "It's not the Harvest but the Experience!!!" Here's some pics of the deer & turkeys from today.

That's no problem. I also have a shotgun and know some public land up here. I've been hunting since the age of 7. Born and raised in Alabama where we hunted squirrels, rabbits, dove, quail and then in the 70's started deer hunting. First elk hunt was in 2001. Started bow hunting in 2002 and that started the fever again. Keep in touch.

Hey Grizz. I am a young guy and new to hunting. It seems you live right around the corner. Always been interested in hunting, and have lots of family in North Idaho that are big on it, but never had anyone near me to learn from till I got married. Never done any bird or turkey hunting, but I am picking up my first shotgun wednesday. Last season was my first year deer hunting. Made a couple trips to D zone, around bowman lake and Union Valley with my father in-law. Didn't see a single leagal buck, but had a heck of a time. Would really appreciate having someone to learn from even if it was just to get together, look at the maps and bounce ideas off of someone with some experience.
