Attached is a group I shot this a.m. with my Sharps reproduction 45-70: cast 515 gr. creedmore bullet using wheelweights and tin, chilled for 48 hours, sized to .4582" and loaded with 28.0 gr. IMR 4198, CCI benchrest primer in a WW case. Distance was 100 yards, off sandbags.

The hole is ragged 'cause the bullets are moving slow. You know why they're moving so slowly? 'CAUSE THEY DON'T NEED TO GO FAST!!!! When you're shooting a thumb, it makes it's own right of way.
I also moved the sights up and to the left, just for you Dan. Because, that group wasn't close enough to kill anything, unless it's bigger than a gopher..........

This is 10 shots from my 03-A3 Springfield, 100 yards, with a loose foreend rest. That is a speck away from a perfect score on a 100 yard small bore target. You bet they shoot.~Muir

Yeah, yeah, yadda yadda. Your throwing a bus downrange, I get it. I should be seeing a bus shaped hole in the x ring.:mooning:
On a serious note...now that CA has done away with lead wheel weights, will you be able reproduce the lead-tin mix? Next time we meet up, I'd love to get into a discussion on the whole bullet casting thing.

You and Chuck ought to come over for dinner next time you're up and I'll show you what I'm doing.
The AAFES store and others-who-shall-remain-nameless have been laying 'em on me and I'm probably up to around 500 lbs. of metal. That will last me a long time if I only use 'em for my Sharps. I cast for the .45 acp too, but I just use range lead with solder for that.

Holy smokes! 500 lbs? Is the apocalypse neigh and I didn't get the memo?
Chuck and I may take you up on that offer. I think this years VAFB blacktail hunt is gonna be fast and furious. We're gonna be up there 1 Oct and hope to get a buck each in 2-3 days. We have to be at the Kaibab on the 21st.
I burning alot of vacation time this year!

Me too, man. My best friend drew a coveted bull tag on private land in Colorado for the late season: 17 November. He wants me there. Then off to Wyoming to try and fill three cow tags. Then have Thanksgiving with the family. Then drive back to California. It would be SO much easier if I was living out there......

That's pertty good shooting. Just curious here, what do you use for bullet lube? Homemade or store bought?

I don't know which shooting you're referring to but my cast loads get Tamarac "Hi-Temp'" lube. It just handles better in warm environments.~Muir

T/C bullet lube. The high temperature stuff. You have to heat the luber/sizer, but I'm using a Star, which makes the job a LOT easier. That's the best luber/sizer on the market, IMO; and I've used several. I can sit down with 1,000 .45 bullets for the 1911 and lube/size 'em all in less than 30 minutes.

What kind of speeds and pressures are you running using that T/C lube? I have a hard time getting it to stay on my bullets unless I lube immediately before using. If I store them I lose lube due to hardening.~Muir

I have none of those issues. The lube is driven deep into the grooves and remains there until loaded into the case. My .45 load is pretty standard: 935 fps. My Sharps load is probably in the range of 1,200 fps. That has more to do with the bullet/gun combo than the lube. If I go over about 1,350 it starts to keyhole. I'm using wheel weights and tin, frozen after casting for 48 hours then lubed/sized.
I have also used Red Rooster lube with similar results.
Do you ever shoot in freezing weather? My T/C lubed bullets shed frozen lube like mad. ~Muir

I live in a pretty benign climate. Once the bullet is loaded into the case it wouldn't matter what the temp is anyway. The trick is to heat the lube.
Gotcha. I use is for my 1859 Sharps Business Rifle which is a 54 caliber paper cartridge gun. In freezing weather the lube (applied hot) tends to fracture and fall off.~Muir

You should probably be using a more traditional lube that contains SPG and beeswax. Lyman makes a good one, but it's kinda smoky. Not a consideration for you using blackpowder.

The last month or so I've been kind of "going back to school" on bulletcasting and I've sent a LOT of rounds downrange with the Sharps. Learned a bunch, and this time I have been saving my targets with their data to refer back in years to come. (I hate that feeling: "Didn't I already try that powder/bullet/primer?") I'm getting much more consistent results, aided in part by having a chronograph. I am also using my own formula of bullet lube, which hopefully will allow slightly higher velocities. The barrel is resting on bags at 9" from the front of the forearm to take advantage of a node (natural frequency).
My shoulder is yellow with a fading bruise, there's a tick in my right eye, but here's the result.

And, two more groups. All with the same bullet. Different powders or other parameter.

When you gonna take it off the 50 foot range and move it over to 25 yards?:stir pot:
I mean, someday, your going to have to use the big-boy range and, gasp, shoot at 100 yds!
Also, I see you got that bullet tumbling problem worked out.:bag-on-head:

You're just jealous.
I can't hunt, so I might as well work on my loads. That's basically why I own this rifle. It was meant for a big cast bullet.
Really; the next time you're up, you need to come by and check out my setup.
The next step is to shoot a slightly softer alloy and see if I can get similar results. I have 'em loaded up and am waiting for the rain and wind to stop. Rain in May? Gimme a break! (The hogs are gonna LOVE this rain......)

One of these trips up, I'd love to see the setup. Thing is, we're normally hunting our butts off in the limited time we have. One day...
Yeah, the hog's love this rain, now if we could just get the CO to cooperate. You know, FPCON Bravo is probably going to stay for the rest of the year. Hell, after 9/11, the only shut down for 10 days!
